The American Today: Tulsa Blanks Oklahoma State

Tulsa blanked Oklahoma State (OSU), 3-0, at the Collins Family Softball Complex in Tulsa, Okla. Junior Caitlin Sill (8-9) struck out five batters in her complete-game three-hit shutout. She pitched four innings without allowing OSU a hit, while Tulsa tallied 11 hits in the win. Senior Erica Sampson went 3-4 at the plate and scored Tulsa’s run in the bottom of the first on a base hit by first baseman Julie Kernen. Sophomore outfielders Brittany Walker and Maddie Withee each had one RBI for the Hurricane, scoring a pair of runs in the third inning. The second meeting between the two teams will take place Thursday at 7 p.m. CT at Cowgirl Stadium in Stillwater, Okla.

Central Connecticut State 3, UConn 1

UConn’s three-game winning streak ended with a 3-1 loss to in-state rival Central Connecticut State Wednesday afternoon at Burrill Family Field. Central Connecticut scored all three of their runs on three hits and one Husky error in the fifth. The Huskies threatened in the first inning, but the Blue Devils were able to prevent them from scoring until Emily O’Donnell blasted a solo homerun to left field in the seventh. O’Donnell tallied her sixth homerun of the season and had both of UConn’s hits. Sophomore Taylor Townsend’s team-best reached-base streak was extended to nine games in the Huskies’ loss. UConn dropped to 15-24 overall and will look to improve their conference record as they travel to Houston for a three-game series against the Cougars this weekend.

East Carolina fell 6-1 and 13-0 in a doubleheader to No. 23/24 James Madison Wednesday afternoon in Greenville, N.C. The Pirates’ only run of the day was the result of sophomore Kacie Oshiro’s solo homer to right field in game one. It was the first homerun of Oshiro's collegiate career. Oshiro’s shot cut James Madison’s early lead in half, but the Dukes tallied four more runs to secure a 6-1 win in the first game of the doubleheader. In the second game, Dukes junior left-handed pitcher Jailyn Ford (12-4) threw a perfect game, as they swept the Pirates 13-0.  East Carolina will travel to Tampa, Fla. to face USF in a conference series beginning Saturday.

A total of 21 runners were left on base by Memphis in their Wednesday doubleheader at UT Martin. The Tigers left 10 base runners stranded in their 2-0 loss in the first game, as they were unable to score with the bases loaded twice. The game concluded after eight innings when UT Martin’s Renate Meckl hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the inning to give the Skyhawks the victory. Jordan Richwood (7-13) pitched all 7.1 innings for the Tigers, giving up eight walks and four hits. Memphis had six hits in the loss. The Tigers outhit UT Martin again in the second game, but their only run came from freshman Katie Brignac’s solo homerun in the fourth inning. Brignac tallied her third homer of the season and second in the past week. The Skyhawks were held scoreless until the fifth inning, when they scored twice due to three fielding errors. They extended their lead in the sixth with a three-run shot by Lauren Smith, giving UT Martin a 5-1 advantage. The Tigers missed their opportunity to rally in the seventh, as the game ended with the bases loaded.  Memphis will face No. 15/17 UCF at home in a three-game series, starting with a Saturday doubleheader at 1 p.m. CT.

No. 2/1 Florida 7, USF 0

The Bulls suffered a 7-0 loss to defending national champions No. 2/1 Florida Gators at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium Wednesday night in Gainesville, Fla. USF totaled three hits in the loss, including a single by Kristen Wyckoff in the third, which extended her hitting streak to eight games. The Gators (41-4) took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first, adding on two more runs in each the fourth and fifth innings. The Bulls’ Karla Claudio pitched two scoreless innings in relief, marking her second solid outing against the Gators this season. USF will host East Carolina in a three-game series at USF Softball Stadium this weekend.
