The American Today: Houston, Albany Nipped in Non-Conference Action

UConn fell by one run on the road at Albany while Houston was edged by Texas in the Cougars' ninth annual Striking Out Breast Cancer game.

Albany 2, UConn 1

UConn fell in midweek action and dropped a 2-1 decision to Albany on the road on Wednesday, April 1. The Huskies now stand at 10-21 and will turn their attention to their home opener against USF this weekend, while the Great Danes improved to 13-7. Kayla Doty did not allow a hit for UConn until the seventh inning, retiring 20 of the game's first 23 batters before surrendering a two-run walkoff to Elizabeth Snow in the bottom of the seventh. The sophomore RHP finished with a 6.2 IP, 1 H, 2 BB, 7 K line. Devin Durando picked up her seventh win for the Danes, tossing 3.0 innings of one-hit ball in relief. In the setback, Emily O'Donnell and Taylor Townsend each notched their team-leading seventh multiple-hit games of the year.

No. 25/RV Texas 13, Houston 12

Four home runs including a grand slam by junior Julana Shrum wasn’t enough to hold off in-state rival No. 25/RV Texas as Houston dropped a heartbreaker to the Longhorns, 13-12, in front of 1,500 fans during the 9th Annual Striking Out Breast Cancer game. The Cougars fell to 17-18 on the season with the loss while Texas improved to 24-9. The 1,500 fans on hand for the game marked the highest attendance of the season at Cougar Softball Stadium. This game was also the longest seven-inning game of the year (2:57). In their last at bat, the Longhorns put two across to regain the lead off three singles. Selena Hernandez led the Cougars as she went 3-for-3 with two home runs, four runs, two walks, and three RBIs. Shrum followed going 3-for-4 with two home runs and six RBIs.
