Memphis Splits Midweek Doubleheader Against Murray State

Memphis topped Murray State 5-0 in the first game of Tuesday’s doubleheader at Racer Field, before falling 9-1 in five innings to the Racers in game two. In the process, the Tigers snapped Murray State’s (33-17, 17-7 Ohio Valley Conference) 13-game home win streak that started following a pair of home losses to then No. 13 Kentucky.

In game one Memphis outhit Murray State 11-3, with Brittany Vaughn and Katie Brignac tallying two hits each. Memphis took a 2-0 advantage in the second inning on an RBI triple by Sami Jo Schulz followed by an RBI single by Addison Maxwell. The Tigers put up two additional runs in the third inning to extend their lead to 4-0. Anna Thomas doubled down the left field line to score Lindsay Crowdus, and then scored on Vaughn’s RBI double. After three scoreless innings Memphis added the final run in the seventh when Brignac hit her team-leading fifth homerun of the season. Jordan Richwood threw a complete game for the Tigers, striking out five while allowing just three hits and one walk.

Murray State took an early lead in the second game, tallying three runs in each the first and second innings while holding Memphis scoreless. Trailing 6-0 heading into the fifth inning, the Tigers were able to get a run across when Wheeler Hill scored on Katie Brignac’s RBI groundout. However, Murray State cut the game short by adding three more runs in the bottom of the inning, concluding the game with a final score of 9-1. Lindsay Crowdus went 3-for-3 at the plate for Memphis in the loss, accounting for three of the team’s five hits. The Tigers (17-32, 4-11 The American) will finish their regular season at home this weekend in a three-game conference series against Houston. The first pitch of Saturday’s doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. CT.
