Houston 7, Lamar 2
Houston topped Lamar 3-2 and 7-2 to complete the sweep in a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday evening at the Cougar Softball Stadium. Houston (26-24, 9-5 American) will conclude the regular season with a three-game conference series at Memphis this weekend. The first game of Saturday’s doubleheader against the Tigers is set to begin at 1 p.m. CT.
In game one Lamar scored a run in the top of the third inning to take a 1-0 lead before the Cougars tied the game 1-1 with a RBI single by Julana Shrum in the bottom of the fourth. The Cardinals regained the lead 2-1 in the top of the fifth with a solo homerun by Shannon Sain. In the bottom of the sixth Houston plated a pair of runs to take a 3-2 advantage. Selena Hernandez scored when Shrum grounded into a double play, tying the game 2-2. Courtney Klingler stepped up to the plate with two outs and no one on and gave the Cougars a3-2 lead with a solo homerun; her seventh of the season. Houston kept Lamar from scoring the following inning, and concluded game one with a 3-2 victory. Katie St. Pierre went 2-for-3 at the plate with her 16th stolen base in the win.
Hernandez led the Cougars in game two, going 3-for-3 with two homeruns and five RBIs in the team’s 7-2 victory. The first homer came in the bottom of the first as Hernandez knocked the first pitch to left center, bringing home Kaylin Crumpton who reached base on a single. Houston had a 2-0 advantage before Lamar tied the game 2-2 in the top of the second on a hit, a walk and an error. The Cougars responded with three runs on four hits in the bottom of the third to take a 5-2 lead.
Tulsa 9, Missouri State 2
Tulsa picked up a 9-2 victory in its final regular season home game on Wednesday against Missouri State. The Bears scored a run in the top of the first and the Hurricane responded with four runs in the bottom of the second. Missouri State’s Chelsea Jones had a solo homerun in the top of the third inning which cut Tulsa’s lead to two (4-2). The Hurricane came back and scored five more runs on four hits in the bottom of the inning, to extend the lead to 9-2. The final six innings of the game were scoreless, and Tulsa earned the victory. Maggie Withee went 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs in the game, while Jodi Edmiston went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs. Tulsa (31-17, 9-6 American) will finish out the regular season with a three-game conference series at UConn over the weekend. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday at Burrill Family Field, with the first pitch set for 12 p.m. ET.
Quinnipiac 5, UConn 4
UConn fell 5-4 in a non-conference game against in-state rival Quinnipiac on Wednesday at Burrill Family Field. The Bobcats took the lead first, scoring a pair of runs in the second inning on a solo homerun and RBI double. In the bottom of the fourth the Huskies tied the score 2-2 as Dominique Pinto notched an RBI single and a throwing error by the third baseman allowed Alyssa Gardea to cross the plate . Quinnipiac regained the lead in the fifth, scoring two more runs and bringing the score to 4-2. UConn added another run in the bottom of the inning on an RBI by Taylor Townsend (3-for-4 at the plate), cutting the Bobcats’ lead to one (4-3). Quinnipiac extended the lead to 5-3 in the top of the seventh, and the Huskies fought to rally in the bottom of the inning. A two-out RBI double by Emily O’Donnell gave UConn another run, but the next batter flied out and the game concluded with Quinnipiac earning the 5-4 victory. UConn (17-31, 4-10 American) will resume play on Thursday with a non-conference matchup against UMass at 4 p.m. ET in Storrs, Conn.
