Dawkins, Dunleavy, Smith Collect First Wins with Programs on Monday Night

Johnny Dawkins, Mike Dunleavy, Sr., and Tubby Smith all recorded their first victories with their new programs as UCF, Tulane and Memphis, respectively, recorded wins on Monday night. Additionally, nationally-ranked Cincinnati and East Carolina also tallied victories.

#24/25 Cincinnati 74, Albany 51
(AP) Once Cincinnati applied a little pressure, everything became easy.

Jacob Evans III had nine points during a run that put Cincinnati in control midway through the second half, and the 24th-ranked Bearcats overcame cold shooting and a sloppy start to beat Albany 74-51 on Monday night.

Evans' 3-pointer started a 13-2 run that allowed the Bearcats (2-0) to finally shake loose. They went only 5 of 21 from beyond the arc, but Evans finished with 19 points.

David Nichols scored 13 points and Joe Cremo had 12 for Albany (1-1), which self-destructed with 22 turnovers -- 11 in each half. Cremo had eight of them.

Cincinnati led only 29-27 at halftime as the Bearcats shot 33 percent from the field and got outrebounded 19-15. There was one tie and 10 lead changes, and neither team could make shots consistently. Cincinnati, however, outscored Albany 40-18 over the final 15 minutes of the game.


UCF 80, Nicholls State 56
(AP)  Matt Williams scored 20 points -- 18 coming on 3-pointers -- and all five UCF starters scored in double figures in an 80-56 win against Nicholls State on Monday night.

Tacko Fall, currently the tallest player in NCAA basketball at 7 feet 6 inches, scored 16 points and grabbed 16 rebounds, Nick Banyard had 10 points and 12 boards, while Tanksley Efianayi had 16 points and 9 rebounds.

But UCF (1-0) only led 33-30 at the half, and Tre O'Neal's steal and layup for Nicolls (1-1) with 15:08 to go tied it at 43. After a TV timeout, Williams made two 3s and Banyard hit a jumper in less than two minutes.

Later, another Williams 3 pushed it to 64-51. Jahvaughn Powell's 3 cut the deficit to 10 with 5:54 to go, but the Knights used a 16-2 run to seal it.

Johnathan Bell led Nicholls with 15 points and 12 rebounds.


East Carolina 61, North Carolina A&T 51
(AP) B.J. Tyson had 13 points, five assists, and four rebounds while Caleb White scored 13 points to lead Eastern Carolina to a 61-51 win over North Carolina A&T on Monday night.

Sam Hunt's opening 3-pointer provided the Aggies with their lone lead of the game. White buried a 3 33 seconds later, sparking a 23-6 run. Tyson, who was 3 of 12 from the floor, capped the run with four free throws. He made all six of his free throws for the Pirates (2-0), who were 19 of 29 from the line. The Aggies (1-1) were 10 of 16.

Hunt buried another 3 to reduce the Aggies' deficit to 26-17 with 4:42 before halftime, but East Carolina outscored North Carolina A&T 9-5 before the break and led by 13.

Hunt led the Aggies with 17 points on 5 for 10 shooting and had five assists.


Memphis 94, UT Rio Grande Valley 75
Behind a career-best game from redshirt freshman K.J. Lawson, the Memphis Tigers were victorious in the debut of new head coach Tubby Smith on Monday night (November 14) at FedExForum.

Lawson hit 8-of-10 shots from the field and all three of his long range attempts en route to setting a new career-high with 25 points, while also breaking his career bests in rebounds (8), assists (6), and steals (4).

Preseason American Athletic Conference co-Player of the Year Dedric Lawson opened his season with a dominating 19-point, 15-rebound double-double, while also dishing out two assists, grabbing two steals and adding a blocked shot. Jeremiah Martin scored a career-high 13 points while dishing out a career-high six assists and adding four steals - also a career best. Markel Crawford scored 11 points with three assists and three steals.
Tulane 93, Southeastern Louisiana 76
Kain Harris had a career-high 19 points to help lead Tulane to a dominating 93-76 win over Southeastern Louisiana on Monday night.

Harris was 3 of 5 from beyond the arc, making 7 of 11 field goal attempts.

Ryan Smith had the first double-double of his career and had career best in points (14) and rebounds (10). Malik Morgan added 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds, Cameron Reynolds chipped in 13 points, and Colin Slater had 12 for Tulane (1-1), which gave head coach Mike Dunleavy, Sr., his first collegiate victory.

Neither team could dominate in the first half. Southeastern tied it at 55 when George Brock hit a jumper with 14:37 left in the final period. Slater answered with a layup and the Green Wave gradually pulled away, going ahead 80-69 with 4:23 remaining.

Marlain Veal had 28 to lead the Lions (1-1). Jordan Capps added 18 and Davon Hayes chipped in 12.


New Hampshire 57, Temple 52
(AP) Jaleen Smith hit two free throws with 12.9 seconds left for a three-point lead and New Hampshire beat Temple 57-52 on Monday night in the NIT Season Tip-Off.

Smith made a layup in traffic as New Hampshire took a 53-52 lead and Smith had a steal underneath the Temple basket.

Shizz Alston Jr. missed a long jumper for Temple and Smith's free throws made it 55-52. Alston Jr. missed a long 3-pointer and Daniel Dion made two more free throws with 2 seconds left.

Sophomore forward David Watkins hit a career-high five 3-pointers and scored 15 points for New Hampshire (2-0). Tanner Leissner had 12 points and eight rebounds and Dion added 12 points.

Obi Enechionyia had 20 points, for his second straight 20-plus-point game, and seven rebounds for Temple (1-1). Daniel Dingle hit three 3-pointers and scored 13 points.


Northeastern 64, #rv/rv UConn 61
(AP) T.J. Williams scored 20 points and Northeastern won 64-61, dropping UConn to 0-2 for the first time in 48 years.

Donnell Gresham Jr. added 13 points for Northeastern (2-0) and Alex Murphy had nine points and 15 rebounds.

Terry Larrier scored 17 points and Jalen Adams had 15 for UConn.

The Huskies had a chance to tie the game at the end when freshman Alterique Gilbert stole a cross-court pass from Murphy as Northeastern was trying to run out the clock. But his 3-pointer hit the rim just before the buzzer.

Northeastern led most of the way and was up 35-31 at halftime.

UConn went on a 9-1 run to open the second half to take a four-point lead, but Northeastern responded with a 10-2 run of its own.

A fast-break dunk by Murphy gave Northeastern its largest lead of the second half at 61-54 with just under 4 minutes left.

Larrier's off-balance runner in the lane had cut the lead to three points with 1:07 left and the Huskies forced a turnover to get the ball back. But Larrier missed two 3-pointers before Gilbert's play at the end.

Northeastern shot just 36 percent from the floor, but held UConn to 39 percent and outrebounded Connecticut 47-38, including 17-13 on the offensive boards.
