Final Week of Conference Play Ahead; Two Championship Spots Remain Open

COMPLETE NOTES

THE AMERICAN TODAY

• UConn and SMU have clinched a spot in the conference’s four-team championship heading into the final week of league play. Two slots remain open and four teams remain in the hunt to earn a bid in the league’s postseason tournament.

• The Huskies and the Mustangs will battle it out Saturday night (9:30 p.m. ET) in Dallas for the conference’s top seed and the right to host the championship event. UConn shut out Yale, 2-0, in its final home game on Tuesday while SMU played USF to a scoreless draw during its last time out on Saturday. UConn won the last meeting between the two teams, 1-0, on Oct. 1, 2016. Husky forward Abdou Mbacke Thiam is tied for second in The American in points per game (1.33) in league play. Garrett McLaughlin leads the Mustangs with three goals in conference play, which is tied for second in The American. Scott Levene (UConn) and Michael Nelson (SMU) are first and second in the league, respectively, in shutouts per game in conference play.

• Tulsa and Memphis will kick off the final weekend of conference action Saturday at 2 p.m. ET with the Tigers hosting the Golden Hurricane. Two matches are slated at 7 p.m. ET, including Cincinnati and UCF squaring off at Gettler Stadium, and USF and Temple facing off in Philadelphia.

• UCF, Memphis, USF and Temple are all in contention for the final two spots in the postseason tournament. The Knights are on a four-game win streak and are led offensively by Matias Pyysalo’s 2.5 points per game in league play. Burke Fahling leads the Tigers and the conference in assists per game (0.67), while Bulls keeper Christian Knights leads the league in saves per game (5.67). Knight made a conference-high 15 saves during last Saturday’s draw versus SMU.
