Highlights
- After four weeks of conference play, UCF and Cincinnati remain undefeated with 7-0 records, extending their winnings streaks to 13 and seven-straight matches, respectively. Memphis and Tulane joined them in completing weekend sweeps, as USF and Tulsa also picked up Sunday wins. The Knights and Bearcats are two matches ahead of the Golden Hurricane, who moved into the sole third-place spot in American standings after defeating ECU inside the Reynolds Center.
This weekend included several key milestones, but Cincinnati outside and right side hitter Jordan Thompson highlighted these feats when she set an all-time American record with 44 kills recorded at Wichita State inside the Charles Koch Arena. Her kills served as a program and facility record too. UCF libero Jordan Pingel collected her 2,000th-career dig after the Knights’ head coach Todd Dagenais earned his 200th-career win on Friday night. Pingel is just the second player in conference history to register 2,000 digs. To add to the Knights’ historical weekend, the program earned its 1,000th all-time win. The Knights are just the 24th NCAA Division I team to reach that mark. Another milestone at the net was accomplished Sunday evening when Tulsa senior outside hitter Emily Thorson garnered her 1,000th-career kill. She joins only seven other Golden Hurricane hitters to accomplish this feat.
USF 3, Temple 2
Down 2-0 in the match, USF battled back to take the final three sets to defeat Temple at the Corral. The Bulls had strong efforts from Jaeden Brown with 14 kills, senior middle blocker Clara Payne with 12 kills and junior Jac'cara Walker with 11 kills. Setter Briana Stowell recorded a double-double of 43 assists and 19 digs. Stowell and Walker each have 10 double-doubles to lead the team this year. The Bulls improved to 5-3 in five-set matches. Temple outside hitter Irem Asci had a strong performance, knocking down 22 kills and bumping 21 digs.
UCF 3, UConn 1
UCF defeated UConn 3-1 on the way to its historical day. Pingel led the way with 25 digs en route to setting the school’s record. After an opening frame that saw the Huskies hit .429, the Knights buckled down to hold the visitors under .120 for the final three frames. On offense, the Knights cruised with a .252 clip at the net. McKenna Melville continued to lead the way with 17 kills at a .231 attack percentage.
Tulsa 3, ECU 1
It was a battle between two third-place teams, as Tulsa bounced back to take down ECU 3-1 in the Donald W. Reynolds Center. The Golden Hurricane moved into the sole third-place spot and improved to 8-1 at home this year. Along with Thorson's milestone match, Rachel Moore recorded a double-double, posting 10 kills and 13 digs in the victory. Junior Mariah Pardo tallied a career-high seven kills, while Taylor Horsfall paced the team with 17 digs in the contest.
Tulane 3, Houston 1
Tulane’s Erika Hansel pummeled 19 kills, while hitting over .300, as the Green Wave earned its second win of the weekend in a 3-1 victory over Houston. Makala Heidelberg chipped in with a double-double of 14 kills and 22 digs. Four Tulane players reached double-figure digs in the back row. With the two wins this weekend, the Green Wave improves to 9-2 at home this season.
Memphis 3, SMU 2
Memphis enjoyed a 2-0 weekend at home after outlasting SMU in a 3-2 victory. Outside hitter Hannah Flowers recorded her sixth double-double this season with 20 kills and 10 digs. She added six blocks and had a pair of service aces too. Setter Molly Murrihy earned her seventh double-double this year with 53 assists and 17 digs. The match consisted of a combined 15 service aces from both sides. SMU’s Ryan Palmieri scored a season-high 16 kills.
Cincinnati 3, Wichita State 2
Cincinnati remains undefeated in American play, as the Bearcats defeated 2017 conference champion Wichita State on the road in five sets. Thompson shattered The American's all-time kills record with 44, while hitting .404. She becomes the first American Athletic Conference player to reach the 40-kill mark, as she has recorded 30 or more kills six times this season. She currently leads the nation in kills and points and is also the league’s all-time record holder in these two offensive categories. It marked the first loss for the Shockers on their home court since joining The American in 2017. Cincinnati setter Jade Tingelhoff recorded 43 assists and 11 digs to help her side hit .348 in the win.
