-  Five American volleyball teams recorded sweep victories on Friday night, as two teams remain undefeated in league play and locked in first place heading into Sunday’s action. Cincinnati and UCF each won in three sets to stay perfect against conference opponents with 8-0 records, setting up a battle for first place in The American in two days at 1 p.m. ET. Temple, Tulane and Tulsa joined the Bearcats and Knights in winning in straight sets, as SMU wrapped up the night with an exciting five-set win over Wichita State.
 
Cincinnati 3, USF 0
Cincinnati hit .473 on the way to its ninth-straight win with a 3-0 victory over USF at home. Outside hitter Carly Nolan had a double-double of 11 kills and 11 digs while hitting .450. Right side and outside hitter Jordan Thompson led the offense with 12 kills on 21 swings with one error for a .524 hitting percentage. Three other Bearcats hit over .400, while recording at least six kills. Cincinnati welcomes UCF to St. Ursula Academy on Sunday in a match for first place.
 
Tulane 3, UConn 0
Tulane earned its fourth consecutive conference win, defeating UConn in three sets on the road for the team's 10th sweep of the season. The Green Wave totaled 44 kills in the match while hitting .312, holding the Huskies to a hitting .058. Freshman outside hitter Makala Heidelberg led Tulane's offense, tallying 11 kills and zero errors to record a .407 hitting percentage. The Green Wave will head to Philadelphia, matching up against Temple on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
 
UCF 3, ECU 0
UCF extended its winning streak to 14 matches with a sweep of ECU. The victory sets up a clash with conference co-leaders Cincinnati. UCF had a trio of players in double-digit kills, while its defense held ECU to hitting below .200—its 10th opponent held below that mark this season. Outside hitters McKenna Melville and Kristina Fisher each had a double-double. Melville leads the conference with 13 double-doubles in her rookie campaign. UCF’s winning streak is its longest since 1997.
 
Temple 3, Memphis 0
A hot-hitting Temple team swept visiting Memphis at McGonigle Hall, as the Owls snapped a six-match slide. Temple topped its season-best hitting performance by .038, hitting .318, holding Memphis to a .227 attack. Graduate student Irem Asci finished with 15 kills, hitting .438, while freshman Miray Bolukbasi tallied 13 kills, hitting .455. It marked the second-straight match Asci led the Owls at the net. Temple hosts Tulane on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. ET.
 
SMU 3, Wichita State 2
Trailing 2-1 in the match, five players reached double-digit kills, as SMU battled back to defend its home court and defeat Wichita State in five sets. The final frame came down to the last two points, as the Mustangs got the edge with a 17-15 victory to clinch the match. Rachel Woulfe and Ryan Palmieri each knocked down 13 kills to lead the Mustangs’ offense. Woulfe had two errors on 32 attempts for a .344 clip. Britany Adams, Kendall Patterson and Lily Heim each had a double-double. Tabitha Brown had a double-double of 15 kills and 19 digs to lead the Shockers. SMU hosts Tulsa, while Wichita State travels to Houston Sunday.  
 
Tulsa 3, Houston 0
Tulsa posted its seventh sweep of the 2018 season to maintain its third-place spot in American standings with a 6-2 league record. Tulsa racked up 46 kills on a.240 hitting percentage, to go along with seven service aces. Rachel Moore managed her seventh double-double of the season in the match, accumulating 10 kills and 12 digs, while Callie Cook added nine kills on a.533 clip. Tulsa will stay in Texas when it takes on SMU Sunday.
