UCF takes sole first-place spot in American standings with 5-set win at Cincinnati

-  It was a hard-fought battle between the two undefeated teams atop The American volleyball standings, as UCF outlasted Cincinnati on the road to clinch a 3-2 win and move into the league’s sole first-place spot on Sunday afternoon. SMU and Tulane joined UCF in completing weekend sweeps, while Houston and Memphis also earned five-set wins. Through the halfway point of the conference slate, the Knights’ 9-0 record puts them three matches ahead of third-place Tulsa and four-matches ahead of the two teams tied for fourth place.
 
USF 3, ECU 1
USF bounced back on Sunday, earning a 3-1 road win at ECU. After dropping the second set, the Bulls won-out the final two frames, including a tight 27-25 set four victory. Both teams move to 4-5 in American play. USF hit .293 in the win with three players reaching double-digit kills. Jac’cara Walker had 19 kills and 12 digs for her 11th double-double this year. Middle blockers Jaeden Brown and Clara Payne each hit over .400 with 11 or more kills for USF. Sydney Kleinman had a match-high 20 kills with 13 digs and three service aces to lead ECU with a double-double.
 
Memphis 3, UConn 2
Memphis bounced back on Sunday to go 1-1 over the weekend, outlasting UConn in five sets on the road. Hannah Flowers and Kelsea Bivins combined for 31 kills and six service aces. UConn had four hitters with double-digit kills, as the Huskies hit .319 through five sets. Caylee Parker recorded 21 kills and a .349 hitting percentage.
 
Tulane 3, Temple 0
The Green Wave continues to roll, as they picked up a fifth-straight American win with a 3-0 victory at Temple. It marks the second-straight sweep of the weekend for Tulane. Right side hitter Erika Hansel continues to hit well, as she knocked down a match-high 14 kills with a .609 hitting percentage. Outside hitter Makala Heidelberg and middle blocker Dayna Kern combined for 13 blocks. Libero Kaylie McHugh had a double-double.
 
UCF 3, Cincinnati 2
UCF recorded the second-most blocks in conference history with 22.5 stuffs, as the Knights outlasted Cincinnati on the road to remain perfect in conference play with a 9-0 record. UCF extended its winning streak to 15-straight matches, while taking the sole first-place spot in The American. Freshman outside hitter McKenna Melville registered her league-high 14th double-double of the season with 21 kills and 14 digs. Three Knights reached double-digit blocks with Kathrine Wesolich and Anne-Marie Watson each batting down 12. The stuffs helped hold Cincinnati to a .145 hitting percentage, as four UCF players had double-figure digs in the backrow. Outside hitter Jordan Thompson led Cincinnati with 26 kills and 10 digs for her 12th double-double this year.
 
Houston 3, Wichita State 2
Down 2-0 in the match, Houston battled back to win-out the final three sets on the way to earning its first conference win of the season. The Cougars were led by Alexis Cheatum, who hit .302 with 23 kills. It marked Houston’s third five-set win of the season. Three other players reached double-figure kills, as Abby Irvine and Megan Duncan each had a double-double.
 
SMU 3, Tulsa 0
SMU fended off Tulsa in straight sets to complete a weekend sweep and earn its fifth-straight win at home. The final two frames were within two points, as the Mustangs were led by Brittany Adams with 12 kills. Lexi Nordmann recorded 10 kills with a .474 hitting percentage. It marked SMU’s first weekend sweep since the opening week of conference play.
