-  The American’s volleyball teams began the second half of the 2018 conference slate, as No. 25 UCF and Tulane defended their home courts and extended their winnings streaks on Friday night.  The league’s Sunshine State duo, USF and UCF, each completed come-from-behind wins in five sets, as the conference’s home teams went 5-1. Cincinnati and Tulane each picked up four-set wins, while Tulsa and Wichita State had sweep victories. The Knights remain undefeated in conference play to lead The American with a 10-0 record, as the conference prepares for its final October matches on Sunday.
 
USF 3, SMU 2
USF overcame a 2-0 deficit, as it won its second-straight five-set match at home, defeating SMU 3-2 for its sixth five-set win of the season. The Mustangs led 8-6 in the fifth before a 9-2 run gave the Bulls a wild come-from-behind win. SMU, USF and Wichita State are in a three-way tie for fourth place with 5-5 American records. Redshirt senior Clara Payne (Osteen, Fla.) had a career high 10 blocks and needs just seven more to reach 400 for her career. USF hosts Houston, while SMU travels to first-place UCF on Sunday.
 
UCF 3, Houston 2
UCF escaped a 2-1 scare, completing a come-from-behind win to maintain its 10-0 American mark and extend its winning streak to 16-cosecutive matches after outlasting Houston in five sets. The Knights were led by a career performance from outside McKenna Melville. The rookie notched her first career 20-20 match with 27 kills and 20 digs. UCF hit .406 and .333 over the final two frames to clinch its fourth five-set win of the season and remains unbeaten when going the distance this year.
 
Cincinnati 3, Memphis 1
After losing the opening set 26-24, Cincinnati worked its way back to a 3-1 win at Memphis. The Bearcats remain one match behind UCF in second place with an 8-1 mark. Jordan Thompson led all hitters in the match with 20 kills. She also added in eight digs, two aces and two blocks. Cincinnati will travel to Tulane, as Memphis welcomes ECU to the gym to end its October slate.
 
Tulane 3, ECU 1
Tulane extended its winning streak to six-straight matches, defeating ECU in four sets to improve to 10-2 at Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse. It was a tight battle in the last three sets, which came down to the final three points. Erika Hansel continued with her consistent offensive dominance, recording 15 kills and three blocks in the match while hitting .560. Senior middle hitter Dayna Kern also earned double-digit kills, recording 11 along with five blocks, while hitting .240. Tulane stays at home Sunday afternoon, putting its streak on the line, as Cincinnati heads to New Orleans. ECU looks to bounce back at Memphis.
 
Tulsa 3, Temple 0
Tulsa improved to 9-1 at the Reynolds Center with its seventh sweep victory of the season in a 3-0 win against Temple. The Golden Hurricane remained locked in third place in American standings with a 7-3 conference record. Callie Cook finished the match with 12 total kills and a .524 hitting percentage. Tulsa welcomes UConn to the Reynolds Center on Sunday, as Temple will travel to Wichita State.
 
Wichita State 3, UConn 0
Wichita State hit a season-best .316 and recorded 38 kills to sweep UConn and snap a three-match setback. Megan Taflinger led the Shockers with 11 kills, two services aces and four blocks. The Shockers return to action Sunday against Temple.
