- No. 22 UCF clinched a share of the 2018 American Athletic Conference volleyball title with a 3-0 win over ECU on Sunday, securing the conference’s automatic qualifying spot in the NCAA Tournament. The Knights sealed their second conference title in five years and are currently riding a 21-match winning streak with a 15-0 American record. After sweeping USF, Cincinnati remains the only other conference team in contention for a portion of the title with a 12-3 American mark. However, with only two weeks left of the regular season, UCF could become the outright conference champion with its next win. The Knights join SMU as the only two programs to win multiple American Athletic Conference titles.
Three teams completed weekend sweeps, while five of Sunday’s six winners enjoyed three-set victories. Tulane and SMU joined UCF in going 2-0 over the weekend. The Green Wave is rolling with an 11-match winning streak.
No. 22 UCF 3, ECU 0
UCF swept ECU to clinch its portion of the conference title, along with its ninth 3-0 win of the season. The Knights hit .340 in the win, as freshman Briana Garcia was electric at the net converting 12 of her 19 swings for kills at a career-high .526 clip to lead all players. The Knights held the Pirates to hitting below the .200 line. UCF’s winning streak is the fifth-longest active swing in the NCAA, as the team remains unbeaten at home in 2018 with a 14-0 mark. The Black and Gold will make their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 2014, earning back-to-back postseason bids.
Cincinnati 3, USF 0
After falling to UCF on Friday, Cincinnati needed a win to stay within reach of a share of The American title. The Bearcats won in straight sets at USF to earn their eighth sweep of the year. Outside and right side hitter Jordan Thompson capped off another big week with 24 kills while hitting .512. She also had a strong performance at the service line, finishing the day with four aces. Cincinnati plays its final three regular season matches at Fifth Third Arena.
Temple 3, Memphis 0
Temple snapped a six-match slide with a 3-0 win at Memphis. The Owls sealed the victory with a massive .452 attack in the third set, holding Memphis negative at -.030 to earn the sweep. Katerina Papazoglou led the Owls' offense to the tune of 15 kills, hitting .343, while also adding eight digs.
Tulane 3, UConn 2
Tulane extended its streak after winning a five-set thriller at UConn. Freshman outside hitter Makala Heidelberg earned her 11th career double-double in Tulane's win, tallying 10 kills while hitting .333 and earning 19 digs, while also adding four blocks. Junior libero Kaylie McHugh was a strong force for Tulane on the defensive side of the court, recording a season-high 31 digs. UConn put three players in double-digit kills with freshman Caylee Parker leading the Huskies with a double-double of 18 kills and 14 digs. Tulane is four matches behind UCF in third place with an 11-4 American record.
Tulsa 3, Houston 0
Tulsa defeated Houston in three sets to improve to 11-2 inside the Reynolds Center and maintain its fourth-place spot in the conference’s standings with a 10-5 record. Setter Mariah Pardo tallied her team-high 12th double-double of the season, adding 26 assists and 11 digs in the win.
SMU 3, Wichita State 0
SMU completed its season series sweep against 2018 American champion Wichita State with a 3-0 win at Charles Koch Arena on the American Digital Network. Outside hitter Brittany Adams led the Mustangs’ offense with 14 kills in the win. Setter Lily Heim finished the match with 34 assists and 10 digs, pacing SMU’s offense to hitting over .300.
