- After winning a share of the 2018 American Athletic Conference volleyball title last weekend, No. 21 UCF became the outright champion with a straight-sets win at SMU in the final Friday of conference play. With two matches left of the regular season, the Knights remain unbeaten in American play with a 16-0 record after extending their winning streak to 22-straight matches. UCF will return to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in four seasons after earning their second conference title in five years.
UConn, ECU and USF joined UCF in sweeping opponents on Friday night, as Temple and Cincinnati also picked up wins. The conference’s final set of weekend matches will take place on Sunday, as each team will face their travel partners on Wednesday, November 21 to conclude the regular season action.
Cincinnati 3, Tulane 2
Cincinnati clinched its eighth five-set match of the season with a 3-2 win over Tulane. After dropping sets three and four, the Bearcats overcame a four-point deficit in the fifth set to take the final frame, 15-13 and secure the match victory. Cincinnati ended the Green Wave’s 11-match swing behind a 29-kill performance from the nation’s leader in kills and points, outside and right side hitter Jordan Thompson. Setter Jade Tingelhoff added a double-double of 43 kills and 23 digs. After recording a pair of service aces, Tulane libero Kaylie McHugh tied the conference’s record with 52-career aces. The Green Wave put five players in double-digit kills, while hitting .281. Head coach Jim Barnes looks to get his 400th-career win on Sunday when Tulane travels to Greenville, N.C., to take on ECU. Cincinnati will stay at Fifth Third Arena for the rest of the regular season, hosting Memphis next.
No. 21 UCF 3, SMU 0
It marked the 10th sweep of the year for UCF, as middle blockers Kathryn Wesolich and Anne-Marie Watson were walls at the net. The two combined for 12 blocks to help hold SMU to hitting .146. It marked the 13th time the Knights have reached 10 blocks in a match this season and the third time doing so in a sweep. Outside hitters Kristina Fisher and McKenna Melville powered the offense with 36 of the Knights’ 45 kills. UCF will play its final regular season road contest of the year at Houston on Sunday.
USF 3, Houston 0
USF secured the program’s 20th 20-win season and first since 2002 with a three-set victory at Houston. The Bulls had 11 blocks and held the Cougars’s offense to hitting .087. Jac’cara Walker had 15 kills on a .382 hitting clip. USF will head to SMU on Sunday.
Temple 3, Wichita State 1
Temple used come-from-behind wins in the first and fourth sets to capture a 3-1 victory over Wichita State, splitting the season series with the Shockers. Four players reached double-digit kills, as Miray Bolukbasi led the Owls, smashing her career-high with 19 kills while hitting .412. Iva Deak also hit over .400 with 13 kills. Temple has won two in a row and will host Tulsa on Sunday.
UConn 3, Tulsa 0
After falling to Tulsa in four sets in late October, UConn defeated the Golden Hurricane in straight sets to earn its revenge and split the season series. The Huskies stifled Tulsa’s offense with 66 digs and six blocks, holding the Golden Hurricane to a .146 hitting percentage. Freshman Caylee Parker recorded a double-double of 14 kills and 11 digs. Setter Emma Turner had six kills on a .600 hitting clip with 29 assists and eight digs. UConn will host Wichita State on Sunday.
ECU 3, Memphis 0
ECU snapped a 10-match skid with a 3-0 win over Memphis inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum. The Pirates have won three of the last four encounters with the Tigers, all in straight sets, as the team got its vengeance after falling to Memphis in five sets earlier this season. Outside hitter Sydney Kleinman paced ECU with 10 kills and hit .300. The Pirates’ defense held the Tigers to hitting below .100, recording 10 blocks in the win. ECU will stay at home Sunday and welcome Tulane to the gym.
