PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s weekly men’s basketball honors for the fifth week of the college basketball season.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
DaQuan Jeffries – Tulsa – Sr. – G/F – Edmond, Okla.
Jeffries paced the Golden Hurricane to a 2-0 week with a pair of wins over Big 12 foes Oklahoma State and No. 16/15 Kansas State. The senior averaged 12.0 points and 4.0 rebounds, along with a block, steal and assist per game. He scored nine of his game-high 20 points in the final 61 seconds to help Tulsa past OSU, 74-71. Jeffries then had two blocks and forced a pair of missed shots on KSU’s final possession to give the Golden Hurricane its first win (47-46) over a ranked team since 2016.
FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
Tyler Harris – Memphis – G – Memphis, Tenn.
Harris earns his second weekly freshman honor as he helped lead Memphis to a 2-0 week with 23.0 points per game while shooting 52-percent from the field (13-of-25 FG). The freshman had 22 points and hit a key 3-pointer down the stretch in the win over South Dakota State, 88-80. Harris also had 24 points with five assists and went 10-of-11 from the line to down UAB, 94-76. He had four 3-pointers in both wins.
HONOR ROLL
Caleb Daniels – Tulane – So. – G
Averaged 20.0 points and 9.0 rebounds in a 1-1 week. Shot 69.6-percent from the field and had a double-double (17 points, 10 rebounds) in a win over UT-Martin.
Alterique Gilbert – UConn – RS-So. – G
Scored a career-high 24 points against No. 11/11 Florida State. Had a personal-best 11 assists in a win over Lafayette. Averaged 18.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists in 1-1 week.
Jeremiah Martin – Memphis – Sr. – G
Helped the Tigers to wins over South Dakota State and UAB with 18.0 ppg, 4.0 rpg and 4.5 apg. Had 22 points, five rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocks against the Jackrabbits.
Galen Robinson, Jr. – Houston – Sr. – G
Wins over Lamar and at Oklahoma State keep the Cougars undefeated for their first 8-0 start since 1969-70. Averaged 11.5 points, 6.5 assists and 4.0 rebounds while shooting 61.5-percent (8-of-13) from the field.
Tre Scott – Cincinnati – RS-Jr. – F
Put up a pair of double-doubles, averaging 16.0 points and 10.0 rebounds in wins over Northern Kentucky and Xavier as UC has now won nine-straight games. Had 22 points and 10 rebounds against NKU.
