Memphis's Zalzman, USF's Skublak Named Scholar All-Americans

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Two American Athletic Conference men's soccer seniors were recognized by United Soccer Coaches on Tuesday as the national organization released its list of 2018 Scholar All-Americans.

Memphis's David Zalzman and USF's Tomasz Skublak, both First Team All-Conference honorees, were named to the Second Team Scholar All-America as two of 28 national honorees. In order to earn earn Scholar All-American status, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.30 grade point average on a 4.0 scale, have started more than 50 percent of all games and significantly contribute to their team, be nominated by their head coach and be a junior or above in academic standing.

Zalzman's honor is the first academic All-American recognition for a Tiger since Mark Sherrod was named to the First-Team in 2013. 

The senior has earned a 3.82 GPA as an information systems and supply chain management major. During his time at Memphis, he has been a part of the Tiger 3.0 Club and has earned his way on the Dean's List five times. Zalzman has also been included in the Tiger Academic 30 twice. Zalzman has also been an addition to three straight American Athletic Conference All-Academic Teams.

On the field, Zalzman earned his second all-conference award, a first-team all-conference nod after scoring four goals as the captain of the Tigers. The Maracay, Venezuela native netted two PKs during the season, including the equalizer in the AAC Championship Quarterfinal win over USF.

Skublak (Hamilton, Canada), owns a 3.42 GPA and is majoring in health science at USF. The senior is anticipating spring graduation and this is his first scholar all-region honor. 
 
The striker netted 8 goals and added an assist for USF in the regular season, leading USF in goals scored. He also led the Bulls with game-winning goals this season with four, including two double-overtime golden goals. Skublak took 44 shots on the year with 18 coming on frame. 
 
The senior played in all 16 games in the green and gold this season and was twice named AAC Offensive Player of the Week. Skublak's team-leading eight goals is good enough for a third-place ranking in the league. He also earned two brace's this season, scoring two goals against Tulsa and another pair at Cincinnati.
