Wichita State Breaks Field-Goal Percentage Record; USF and ECU Also Earn Wins

USF 64, SMU 54

The USF Sun Dome was full of pink on Valentine's Day as the No. 22/21 Bulls honored breast cancer survivors in their annual Play4Kay pink game. 
 
Maria Jespersen led the Bulls' offense with 28 points and added 10 rebounds in her 14th double-double this season. Jespersen shot 50 percent from long range and finished 8-of-19 from the floor. The forward filled her stat line with four assists, two blocks, one steal and didn't tally a single turnover. The Bulls (21-5, 10-2 American) recovered from a slow start in the first half with a 23-point third quarter. USF stretched its lead to 16-points at the end of the frame, its largest lead of the game. Kitija Laksa scored 12 of her 16 points in the second half.

SMU (10-16, 4-9 American) was paced by Kiara Perry's 18 points and seven boards, with McKenzie Adams adding 11 points. The Mustangs held the Bulls to 13 fewer points than their season average
 


ECU 75, Memphis 62
ECU (14-11, 6-6 American) defeated Memphis (7-18, 2-10 American) on Wednesday night in Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum. The Pirates have now won five-consecutive home games and five of their last seven contests.
 
The Pirates placed four players in double-figures. Freshman Necole Hope led the team in scoring for the third time this season, recording 15 points and added a career-high five assists. Fellow freshman Ariyana Williams notched 13 points in 18 minutes of action. Dominique Claytor and Salita Greene each added 10 points. Freshman Lashonda Monk recorded eight points, seven rebounds, seven assists and three steals in a team-high 35 minutes.

Back-to-back three-pointers to open up the fourth quarter ignited a 26-point fourth for ECU. Memphis scored 17 points in the fourth, but was unable to overcome the hot start to the period for the Pirates. For Memphis, Brea Elmore led the Tigers with 21 points on 8-of-15 shooting while the team shot 48.1 percent as a unit. 

Wichita State 88, Temple 81
Behind a career-high 38 points from Rangie Bessard,, Wichita State held off Temple, 88-81, Wednesday night in Charles Koch Arena.

Wichita State (11-16, 6-7 American) also saw the school record for field goal percentage in a single game come crashing down. The Shockers shot a blistering 70 percent from the field to break the previous record of 65.4 percent, which was tied earlier this season. The Shockers hit 17-of-22 field goal attempts after halftime en route to the record-breaking 70 percent mark. WSU also converted on 7-of-13 attempts from deep and they needed every one of them to combat 19 turnovers and being outrebounded by Temple, 29-26.

Temple hit 12 three-pointers on 34 attempts and shot 45 percent overall, but could not get stops on the defensive end.Tanaya Atkinson led the Owls with 22 points and three other Temple players finished in double-figures.
