USF 77, UCF 68
Kitija Laksa and Maria Jespersen combined for 53 points Sunday in an overtime thriller at UCF. The Bulls swept the series against the Knights after a 77-68 win at CFE Arena. USF claimed all six points in the War on I-4 series.
USF (22-5, 11-2 The American) clinched its seventh straight victory in dramatic fashion. The Bulls gained a two-game cushion over third place UCF (17-9, 9-4 The American) in American Athletic Conference standings.
With under two minutes remaining in regulation, Laksa sunk a three-pointer from the top of the key to tie the game at 57. In the next possession, Jespersen gave the Bulls a three-point lead, their first since UCF went on an 11-0 run earlier in the quarter. The Knights tied the game with 11 seconds left, forcing the Bulls' into overtime.
The extra period belonged to the Bulls. USF shot 60 percent from the floor and 50 percent from long range in final five minutes. Laia Flores scored five of her eight points in overtime, including a dagger with one minute to play.
UCF's Zakiya Saunders poured in 21 of her career-high 31 points in the second half and overtime periods to lead the Knights. She became the first Knight to reach the 30-point mark this season, and extended her double-figure scoring streak to 11 games.
Wichita State 52, SMU 45
Katie Lou Samuelson scored 27 points and UConn continued to roll through its American Athletic Conference schedule with a 106-45 rout of Temple on Sunday at the XL Center. Kia Nurse adde 16 points for the Huskies (26-0, 13-0), who put six players in double figures.
UConn has never lost an AAC regular-season or tournament game (95-0) and holds a two-game lead over USFwith three games to play this season.
Emani Mayo had 17 points for Temple (10-16, 2-11), and rookie Mia Davis finished with eight points and a team-high six rebounds.
Memphis 73, Tulane 60
A pair of double-doubles by Cheyenne Creighton and Jasmine James combined with 20-point games by Creighton and Brea Elmore ledthe University of Memphis women's basketball team to a 73-60 victory over Tulane Sunday afternoon on ESPN2. The win improves the Tigers to 8-18 on the year and 3-10 in American Athletic Conference play.
The 18-6 second quarter in favor of Memphis gave the Tigers their first double-digit lead of the game. After Tulane cut the Memphis lead down to six, the suffocating defense in the final three minutes of the game halted the Green Wave's chances of coming back against the Tigers. Memphis finished the final quarter shooting 7-for-9 from the floor.
Kolby Morgan led Tulane with 14 points, seven rebounds, three steals and two blocks, and Meredith Schulte also scored in double figures with 12 points despite fouling out. Tatyana Lofton had a team-high four assists off the bench and contributed 9 points in 17 minutes.
