PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s weekly baseball honors for the week ending May 6.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Treg Haberkorn * Sr. * OF * Cincinnati
Haberkorn had a hit in each game of a key series win at Wichita State, leading the team with a .500 batting average. He smashed an RBI double in Game 1 on the way to a 8-2 win and hit a three-run home run in the ninth inning of Sunday’s rubber match to give his side the final 5-1 lead. Overall he recorded four RBIs, four hits and three runs scored.
PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Thad Ward * Jr. * RHP * UCF
Ward had seven strikeouts and kept No. 19 Houston scoreless through the final 4.0 innings to capture the win in a 3-2 series-opening victory on Saturday. The righthander entered the mound in the sixth inning with the bases loaded and no outs in the midst of a 2-2 tie. He retired the side in order to escape the jam damage-free, striking out two Cougars. After his team took the lead in the seventh inning, he retired nine of his final 11 batters faced, striking out the side in the eighth inning. He surrendered one hit and one walk during his outing.
WEEKLY HONOR ROLL
Cam Alldred * Jr. * LHP * Cincinnati
Alldred guided Cincinnati to a series-clinching 5-1 victory at Wichita State on Sunday, fanning a career-high 10 batters and scattering one run on three hits through 7.0 innings of work. The junior southpaw retired the side in order three times. After surrendering one run in the opening frame, he kept the Shockers scoreless through the next six consecutive innings.
Mason Feole * So. * LHP * UConn
Feole had another quality outing on Friday night to grab the series opener in a 5-1 win at Memphis. He chalked up 7.2 innings and struck out nine, while allowing one run on five hits. He shut out the Tigers for the first five innings before giving up just one run in the sixth. Feole has rattled off nine-straight starts of allowing three runs or less.
Jeff Kersten * Jr. * RHP * UConn
Kersten tossed six shutout innings while fanning a career-high eight batters in Game 2, as the Huskies clinched their fifth-straight conference series in a 2-0 win at Memphis. The junior righthander gave up one walk and three hits. He struck out the side in the second inning.
Alec Burleson * Fr. * LHP * ECU
Burleson tossed a career-long 7.1 innings in a series-clinching 8-3 win at Tulane on Saturday. The freshman lefty fanned a career-high seven batters without issuing a walk, registering his first career quality start. Burleson retired 14 consecutive batters from the third to the eighth frame and struck out the side in the second inning.
Bryant Packard * So. * OF * ECU
Packard extended his on-base streak to 28 and his hit streak to 23 through a series sweep at Tulane. He batted a team-best .462 with six hits, two runs scored, two RBIs and a double. He reached base nine times during the series and had two multi-hit games, including a 3-for-5 performance in Game 3.
