Highlights
- Houston, USF and Tulane are off to 3-0 starts following tremendous opening-weekend outings, as The American’s volleyball teams split their Saturday action, going 8-8. The conference holds a 22-11 nonconference record through its first two days of competition with Wichita State set to close out the first weekend of the 2018 season tomorrow at Howard. Eleven conference teams started off the season securing at least one win over the weekend, while nine teams possess winning records. Houston’s Megan Duncan, USF’s Jac'cara Walker and Tulane’s Makala Heidelberg and Kaylie McHugh each earned tournament MVP honors.
LMU 3, Temple 1 | Hofstra 3, Temple 2
An exciting comeback attempt fell short for Temple volleyball in the final match of the Hilton Penn's Landing Temple Invitational, and the Owls (1-2) ultimately lost a pair of matches to LMU and Hofstra. Temple will play at the 2018 Penn State Invitational next weekend.
Cincinnati 3, Saint Louis 0 | Miami (Ohio) 3, Cincinnati 2
After sweeping Saint Louis, Cincinnati battled in its second five-set match of the weekend, but the Bearcats’ triumph came up short in the finale against tournament host Miami (Ohio). Following another double-double performance with a team-high 24 kills and 11 digs, Jordan Thompson was named to the all-tournament team. Jordan ends the weekend atop The American with 5.62 kills per set and 73 total kills. Cincinnati is 2-1 to start off the year.
UConn 3, Georgia Southern 2
UConn ended its opening weekend in a winning manner, outlasting Georgia Southern in a five-set match. The Huskies head back North with a 2-1 record and a pair of 3-2 victories. Emma Turner and Caylee Parker had double-doubles in the win.
Houston 3, Omaha 0
Houston is off to a 3-0 start to the year, following its second sweep victory of the weekend. OH Megan Duncan led the way with 16 kills in a 3-0 win over Omaha to wrap up the action at the New Orleans Invite, earning the tournament MVP honor. MB Kendall Haywood received joined her on the All-Tournament squad. Duncan finished the weekend ranked third in the conference with 4.27 kills per set.
USF 3, Stony Brook 2
USF secured a perfected weekend, going 3-0, after edging reigning America East champion Stony Brook in five sets to clinch its home tournament championship title. The Bulls were guided by junior outside hitter Jac'cara Walker, who followed up 22 kills on Friday with 21 kills and 20 digs. Walker was named the tournament MVP, totaling 43 kills and 31 digs in the three matches.
Iowa 3, SMU 1
Freshman Rachel Woulfe led SMU with 14 kills in a 3-1 loss to Iowa, as the Mustangs wrapped up opening weekend 0-2. Montana Watts was named to the all-tournament team, averaging 5.71 digs per set.
Memphis 3, Arkansas-Pine Bluff 0 | Arkansas State 3, Memphis 0
Memphis won in three but also lost in three in a Saturday split. The Tigers were led by senior Kelsea Bivins, who nearly posted a double-double with nine kills and 14 digs to lift the Tigers to their first win under first year head coach Sean Burdette against Arkansas-Pine-Bluff.
UCF 3, Florida Atlantic 0 | Miami (Fla.) 3, UCF 0
Splitting two matches, the Knights picked up their first sweep of the year against FAU but dropped the nightcap to host Miami (Fla.). Freshman OH McKenna Melville notched her second straight double-double with 16 kills and 13 digs in Game 1, and amassed a .444 hitting percentage and 20 kills to lead the offense in Game 2.
Tulane 3, Incarnate Word 0 | Tulane 3, Louisiana 0
Tulane is yet to drop a set after winning nine-straight to start off the year. The Green Wave swept Incarnate Word, then Louisiana to wrap up their home tournament. A host of Tulane players earned all-conference honors, as Makala Heidelberg and Kaylie McHugh shined, winning MVP and Defensive MVP honors, respectively. Lexie Douglas and Taylor Henigsman joined them on the all-tournament team. After three matches, Tulane leads the league in kills, blocks, assists, and opponent hitting percentage. Dayna Kern ended the weekend with a conference-high 2.00 blocks per set with 14 total stuffs.
No. 23 Purdue 3, Tulsa 0
The Golden Hurricane fell to No. 23 Purdue, 3-0, in the Reamer Club Premier championship match. Despite the loss, it marks the third time in head coach Ryan Wills' five-year tenure the team has started the season 2-1.
Southern Miss 3, ECU 0
ECU fell to the host team Southern Miss in the championship match (3-0). Freshman middle blocker S'mara Riley led the offense with eight kills. The Pirates hold a winning record at the conclusion of opening weekend.
