Highlights
 
- The American’s volleyball teams recorded their best opening day record in conference history after going 14-3 on Friday. The league’s .824 nonconference winning percentage marks the best start to a year in the conference’s six season debuts, bettering the previous mark (.800) set in 2016 when the league went 12-3 on opening day. Ten teams started off the year with a win. ECU, Houston, USF and Tulsa each won both their matches for a 2-0 start. Five matches went the distance, as The American is off to a 5-0 start in five-set matches. Cincinnati, UConn, Houston, USF and Wichita State each won a five-set thriller.
 
USF 3, San Jose State 1 | USF 3, Jacksonville 2
USF showed grit at its home tournament to start the year, battling back twice for a 2-0 start. After dropping the second set in Game 1, the Bulls captured the third and fourth sets to open its 2018 campaign on a positive note with a 3-1 win over San Jose State. USF then outlasted Jacksonville in a 3-2 win, claiming the final two sets in a close match. MB Clara Payne tallied 18 kills, hitting .405 in the two matches, while totaling eight blocks. The Bulls will look to make it a 3-0 weekend at the USF Invitational, but it won't be easy. The tourney concludes at 1 p.m. against Stony Brook, the defending America East champion that also went 2-0 on Friday.
 
Tulsa 3, Bowling Green 0 | Tulsa 3, Wofford 1
The Golden Hurricane started the year 2-0 for the third time in three seasons at the Purdue Reamer Club Xtra Special Premier. Tulsa began its opening day with a sweep victory over Bowling Green, as OH Emily Thorson and Elyse Savadove (.308 hitting percentage) each knocked down 11 kills to fuel the Golden Hurricane’s offense. It marked a collegiate debut for Savadove at middle hitter. Reigning Libero of the Year Taylor Horsfall had 18 digs, while three other players reached double-digit digs. In Game 2, the Golden Hurricane took down Wofford 3-1 with Rachel Moore and Callie Cook each recording six blocks. Moore and Thorson combined for 30 kills. The Purdue Reamer Club Xtra Special Premier wraps up tomorrow as the Golden Hurricane are set to square off with No. 23 host Purdue at 3 p.m. ET.
 
ECU 3, Spring Hill College 0 | ECU 3, Alcorn State 0
After a banner season in 2017, the ECU volleyball team picked up right where it left off Friday with a pair of 3-0 wins over Spring Hill College and Alcorn State at the Southern Miss Classic inside Reed Green Coliseum. Bri Wood ended the night with 20 kills, averaging a .340 hitting percentage. ECU closes out the Southern Miss Classic Saturday evening at 8 p.m. ET when it takes on the host Golden Eagles.
 
UConn 3, Wright State 2 | West Virginia 3, UConn 0
UConn split its opening-day action in Morgantown, W.Va. Down 2-1, UConn edged Wright State in a five-set thriller to open the year, putting up big numbers in the win. Guided by setter Emma Turner, who had a double-double of 55 assists and 15 digs, Danielle Cabel and Iman McGary led the offense with 17 and 15 kills, respectively. Cabel averaged a .303 hitting percentage, while McGary added nine digs. Four players had double-digit digs, led by Elizabeth Kline, who bumped 24. The Huskies held Wright State to a .132 hitting percentage. Caylee Parker led the Huskies with 13 kills against the host West Virginia, but UConn took a three-set loss in Game 2. UConn will wrap up its opening weekend action tomorrow against Georgia Southern at Noon ET.
 
Cincinnati 3, UC Santa Barbara 2
In her return to the court after redshirting last year, three-time conference Preseason Player of the Year Jordan Thompson recorded a double-double of 27 kills and 12 digs, while hitting .295 to lead the Bearcats to a 3-2 opening-day win over UC Santa Barbara. During the fourth set, Carly Nolan, who suited up as the libero, recorded her 1,000th career dig. The Bearcats are back in action on Saturday with two games. First up is a match with Saint Louis at noon followed by a contest with the host Red Hawks at 7:30 p.m. ET.
 
Houston 3, Murray 0 | Houston 3, New Orleans 2
Houston opened its season with a pair of victories. Setter Abby Irvine guided the offense to hitting .278, as Houston swept Murray State to start off the year. The Cougars' victory against New Orleans (0-1) went the distance as Houston won 3-2. Megan Duncan, Irvine and libero Katie Karbo all tallied game-highs. Duncan recorded 22 kills, while Irvine gave out 32 assists and Karbo tallied 17 digs. Houston concludes its time at the UNO Tournament tomorrow, as the Cougars will square up against Nebraska-Omaha.
 
UCF 3, Florida Gulf Coast 1
Freshman OH McKenna Melville led UCF with a double-double of 19 kills and 16 digs in her debut, as the Knights defeated Florida Gulf Coast 3-1. Anne-Marie Watson added 16 kills and put down seven stuffs. UCF will face Florida Atlantic in a neutral match at 1:30 p.m. ET before taking on the host Miami (Fla.) tomorrow night on the ACC Network Extra at 7:30 p.m. ET.
 
Temple 3, Rhode Island 1
Three Temple players reached the 10-kill mark, as the Owls opened the season with a 3-1 win over Rhode Island, while hosting their tournament. Rookie Miray Bolukbasi started her collegiate career with a double-double of 13 kills and 15 digs, while junior Dana Westfield led the Owls with 14 kills. Temple will play two matches tomorrow to close out the tournament.
 
Wichita State 3, James Madison 2
Three out of five sets came down to the final two points, as Wichita State outlasted James Madison 19-17 in the final set to earn a 3-2 win on the road. OH Alex Koon enjoyed a career-high 19 kills, while OH Tabitha Brown and Kali Eaken each had double-doubles. Libero Giorgia Civita registered a career-high 34 digs. The Shockers continue their road trip in Washington, D.C. against Howard Sunday at 3 p.m. ET.
 
Lipscomb 3, SMU 0
OH Brittany Adams scored 11 kills to lead the Mustangs, but SMU lost 3-0 at Lipscomb. SMU is back at it tomorrow in Nashville at 1 p.m. ET against Iowa.
 
Stephen F. Austin 3,  Memphis 0
Hannah Flowers had 11 kills, and freshman Molly Murrihy added 33 assists, but it wasn't enough in the Tigers' 3-0 setback to Stephen F. Austin. Memphis will host Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Arkansas State tomorrow.
 
UTEP vs. Tulane
Tulane began the season a sweep, beating UTEP in a three-set match (25-21, 25-23, 25-21) in the team's I-10 Tournament home opener. Tulane recorded as conference-high 11.5 team blocks, as Dayna Kern accounted for seven stuffs. The Green Wave will face Incarnate Word and Louisiana tomorrow at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. ET respectively.
