Highlights
- UConn and Houston each went 2-0 on Friday to highlight a 10-8 day in nonconference action across The American. The league holds a 38-21 nonconference record this season. Houston (6-0) and Wichita State (4-0) remain undefeated in 2018. Memphis (2-4), USF (4-1), SMU (1-3), Tulsa (3-2) and Tulane (6-2) each split their two matches, while Wichita State (4-0) came out on top in its sole Friday contest. Seven teams enter the Saturday action with winning records, as the league prepares for another 17 nonconference matches, including five against top-25 opponents.
Tulane 3, Alabama State 0 | Georgia Tech 2=3, Tulane 1
Tulane went 1-1 to in its second day of the Georgia Tech Invitational to finish the weekend going 2-2 in Atlanta. It picked up its sixth sweep of the season to start off The American’s Friday volleyball action, defeating Alabama State. The team hit .292, while Lexie Douglas led the way with nine kills and hit .300. Tulane then won the first set at Georgia Tech, but the Yellow Jackets took the next three to clinch the four-set match. Makala Heidelberg led the Green Wave with a double-double of 16 kills and 18 digs in the loss. Tulane returns to action next weekend at the Rutgers Invitational.
Duke 3, USF 1 | USF 3, Texas A&M Corpus Christi 2
USF is yet to play a match in under four sets, as the Bulls split a pair of contests in Baton Rouge, La. Lindsey Pliapol’s double-double (12kills, 22 digs) wasn’t enough, as USF took its first loss of the year to Duke. The Bulls rallied back in their second match though, outlasting Texas A&M Corpus Christi, 3-2, for their third five-set win of the season. USF hit .196 in the victory, led by Jaeden Brown, who recorded 15 kills and a .281 hitting percentage. Three players had a double-double, including Reagan Davey, Jac’cara Walker and Briana Stowell. USF will face LSU on the SEC Network + to conclude its weekend action on Saturday.
East Tennessee State 3, Tulsa 0 | Tulsa 3, Belmont 0
Tulsa won in three and lost in three, splitting its first two matches of the weekend in Nashville, Tenn. at the Bruiser Showcase. Emily Thorson put down 10 kills, bumped six digs and hit .214, but the Golden Hurricane took a 3-0 loss to East Tennessee State. Tulsa then defeated Belmont 3-0 for its second sweep of the year to end the night. The Golden Hurricane averaged a .263 hitting percentage with Thorson and Rachel Moore each knocking down nine kills. Moore hit .438 to lead the offense. The Golden Hurricane will take on UMBC on Saturday afternoon for their final match of the tournament.
UConn 3, New Hampshire 1 | UConn 3, Iona 1
UConn won both its matches to start its home tournament with 3-1 wins over New Hampshire and Iona. Head coach Kris Grunwald reached the 100-wins milestone, as the Huskies have won four in a row. Emma Turner guided the team with a double-double of 44 assists and 18 digs against the Wildcats, while Iman McGary led the offense with 15 kills. Turner had her second-consecutive double-double against Iona, registering 46 assists and 12 digs. Caylee Parker joined her with a double-double of 16 kills and 16 digs. Isabelle Peterson added double-digit kills with 12 and hit .556. UConn is back in action on Saturday afternoon when it hosts Syracuse for its final match of the weekend.
Memphis 3, Florida A&M 1 | UT Martin 3, Memphis 2
Memphis (2-4) split its action at the Skyhawk Invitational in Martin, Tenn. Hannah Flowers, Anna Palmer and Molly Murrihy each had a double-double, as Memphis bounced back from its five-set midweek loss with a 3-1 win over Florida A&M. Flowers led the way with 16 kills, 12 digs and a .324 hitting percentage. Palmer and Sarah Marlatt chipped in with 10 kills each. The Tigers returned to the court to face the host school UT Martin, falling in five sets. Kelsea Bivins shined for Memphis, recording 21 kills, nine digs, two blocks and a .302 hitting percentage. The Tigers hit .206 as a team in the loss. Memphis will wrap up its weekend action at the tournament against Central Arkansas and UAB Saturday.
Houston 3, Nicholls 0 | Houston 3, Sam Houston State 2
Houston remained undefeated to improve to 6-0 after winning its first two matches of the Sawyer Camillo Memorial Classic. First, the Cougars swept its fifth opponent of the year with a 3-0 victory over Nicholls. Megan Duncan had another strong outing after being named tournament MVP last weekend, earning a double-double with her team-best 11 kills and 10 digs. Duncan collected her second-straight double-double of the weekend in a 3-2 thriller over Sam Houston State. She had 18 digs and 11 kills. However, it was Faith Squier who recorded 12 kills and a .392 hitting percentage to guide the offense. Trailing 7-3 in the fifth set, Houston battled from behind to capture the final frame, 15-13. Houston will take on Mississippi Valley State and Louisiana on Saturday.
NC State 3, SMU 1 | SMU 3, Arkansas State 0
SMU swept Arkansas State in its second match of the day to go 1-1 in the SMU DoubleTree Classic Friday. Brittany Adams scored 11 kills to lead the Mustangs against the Red Wolves after scoring 13 kills in four-set loss to NC State earlier in the day. SMU hosts No. 15 Creighton Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET in the final match of the DoubleTree Classic.
Hampton 3, ECU 2
ECU (2-2) hit well as a team, but the Pirates were edged by Hampton in five sets at the Golden Eagle Invitational. Toya Osuegbu and Riley S’mara combined for 26 kills to fuel the team’s .171 hitting percentage. Natalie Tyson added 11 kills, while setter Shelby Martin recorded the team’s only double-double of the match with 37 assists and 11 digs. The Pirates are back at it Saturday, facing USC Upstate and Tennessee Tech in Cookeville, Tenn.
Louisville 3, UCF 0
McKenna Melville led the way with nine kills, but Louisville pulled away in the third set, as UCF took a 3-0 loss. The Knights continue action at the Bubly Invitational on Saturday with a 7:30 p.m. ET match against No. 7 Southern California. The match will stream on ESPN3.
Wichita State 3, West Virginia 1
After dropping the first set to West Virginia, Wichita State battled back to win the final three frames on the way to staying undefeated with a 4-0 record at the BYU Nike Invitational. Three players reached double-figure kills, including Alex Koon, who led the attack with 15 kills and a .438 hitting percentage. She added 16 digs to earn a double-double. The Shockers ended the night hitting .224 in the match. Wichita State will put its undefeated record on the line Saturday when it faces No. 1 Stanford and No. 9 BYU.
No. 6 Penn State 3, Temple 0
Temple stayed within six points in each set, but the Owls took a 3-0 loss to No. 6 Penn State. Dana Westfield led the team with 10 kills, while hitting .333. The Owls return to the court in State College, Pa. to square off against Texas A&M and Indiana on Saturday.
