Highlights
- UCF (5-1) handed No. 7 USC its first loss of the year, while Cincinnati (4-1) took down No. 25 Colorado State to highlight a strong day for American Athletic Conference volleyball teams on Saturday. Cincinnati, ECU (4-2) and Houston (8-0) each went 2-0, while UCF, USF (5-1) and Tulsa (4-2) each won their only match of the day. The conference enjoyed another winning day (10-7) in nonconference action to improve to 48-28 against other conferences this season. Nine of the league's 12 teams possess winning records. The American prepares for its final three matches of Week 2 on Sunday, which includes UCF taking on No. 4 Florida on the SEC Network Plus at 3:30 p.m. ET.
UCF 3, No. 7 USC 0
For the first time since 2011, UCF Volleyball took down a ranked opponent in a 3-1 win over No. 7 USC Saturday night at the Bubly Invitational. UCF was led by Kristina Fisher, who had a match-high 20 kills. Erin Olson had a double-double with 28 assists and 22 digs. Freshman McKenna Melville also recorded a double-double with 15 kills and 13 digs. In 2011, the Knights swept then-No. 3 USC in Fort Myers. The Knights continue action at the Bubly Invitational on Sunday with a 3:30 p.m. match against No. 4 Florida. The match will stream on SEC Network Plus.
Cincinnati 3, No. 25 Colorado State 1 | Cincinnati 3, TCU 2
Cincinnati picked up wins over No. 25 Colorado State and TCU to start off its Week 2 action. The Bearcats took down Colorado State at its home tournament in four sets. Jordan Thompson had a tremendous match, setting a conference four-set record with 31 kills, while hitting .364 to lead the attack. She added 14 digs to earn a double-double and totaled three blocks. She has at least 20 kills in all five of her matches this season. The Bearcats hit .273, as Jade Tingelhoff recorded 53 assists to pace the offense. Jasmine Jones had nine blocks at the net, as the team totaled 11 in the match. Cincinnati then put forth a gritty performance to beat TCU 3-2 in its nightcap. Thompson nearly had thirty kills for the second straight match as she finished with 29, recording her second double-double of the day with 19 digs. Tingelhoff also had a double-double with 47 assists and 10 digs. The Bearcats finish the weekend facing Florida State on Sunday at Noon ET.
ECU 3, USC Upstate 0 | ECU 3, Tennessee Tech 0
ECU enjoyed a pair of 3-0 victories to rebound from a loss on Friday. The Pirates took care of USC Upstate in the morning before turning aside Tennessee Tech in the afternoon. Offensively, freshmen S'mara Riley and Natalie Tyson collected 10 kills apiece against USC Upstate. Tyson then led all players on the floor with 12 kills and Maggie Hallow collected a match-high 19 digs to go along with Bri Wood's 11 in the Pirates' second sweep of the day. ECU wraps up its four-match weekend Sunday afternoon at N.C. Central.
Houston 3, Mississippi Valley State 0 | Houston 3, Louisiana 0
For the first time in 31 years, Houston has started its season 8-0 after a pair of wins at the Sawyer Camillo Memorial Classic. In their first match of the day, the Cougars cruised past Mississippi Valley State, winning in straight sets, as Houston defeated Louisiana 3-1 in the afternoon. At the conclusion of the tournament, senior setter Katie Krebs, junior libero Katie Karbo and sophomore outside hitter Faith Squier were named to the All-Tournament team. Krebs received MVP honors in the process, after leading the Cougars with 80 assists on the weekend, averaging 5.33 helpers per set.
Tulsa 3, UMBC 1
Tulsa defeated UMBC 3-1 in its final match of the Bruiser Showcase. Three players recorded season highs for the Golden Hurricane in the win. Libero Taylor Horsfall tallied 27 digs, while Emily Thorson knocked down 15 kills and setter Mariah Pardo had 28 assists. Tulsa enters its home tournament next weekend with a winning record.
No. 1 Stanford 3, Wichita State 0 | No. 9 BYU 3, Wichita State 0
The Shockers (4-2) dropped a pair of matches against top-10 opponents. Wichita State stayed within five each set, but took a 3-0 loss to No. 1 Stanford. The Shockers battled hard in the third set, as it came down to the last two points with the Cardinals taking the win, 29-27. Tabitha Brown had 11 kills and eight digs. Brown additionally led the Shockers with eight kills, while Kali Eaken had 13 assists and Jordan Roberts had seven digs in the loss against undefeated No. 9 BYU. Each team the Shockers have played so far in 2018 earned a postseason trip in 2017.
Central Arkansas 3, Memphis 0 | Memphis 3, UAB 0
After falling in three sets to Central Arkansas, Memphis' Hannah Flowers knocked down a career-high 19 kills and Kelsea Bivins added 14 kills to lift the Tigers to a 3-0 victory over UAB in UT Martin's Skyhawk Invitational. The Tigers (3-5) hit .376 in their tournament finale.
Texas A&M 3, Temple 0 | Indiana 3, Temple 2
Temple (1-5) fell to a pair of Power 6 teams, closing-out its action at the 2018 Penn State Invitational. The Owls fell in three sets to Texas A&M before dropping a heartbreaker, 3-2, to Indiana in the nightcap. Katerina Papazoglou was great on both offense and defense, tallying a double-double of 17 kills and 27 digs-both team highs.
USF 3, LSU 2
USF is starting to make a trend out of five-set wins, as the Bulls outlasted their fourth opponent of the year with a 3-2 win at LSU in the Tiger Classic. The Bulls are now 4-0 in five-set matches this season and 7-0 since the start of 2017. Freshman libero CC Clausen had 30 digs in the win, totaling a tournament-best 92 in the three matches. She was named the Tiger Classic Best Defender.
Syracuse 3, UConn 2
UConn (5-2) dropped a 3-2 decision to the Syracuse in the final match of the 2018 UConn Challenge Saturday afternoon at Gampel Pavilion. The Huskies finished the weekend tournament 2-1. UConn's Elizabeth Kline and Isabelle Peterson were named to the UConn Challenge All-Tournament team. The Huskies got double-double efforts from setter Emma Turner and freshman Caylee Parker.
No. 15 Creighton 3, SMU 0
SMU (1-4) was edged out in a tightly contested, three-set match against No. 15 Creighton in the final match of the DoubleTree Classic in Moody Coliseum. Brittany Adams led all attackers with 17 kills, earning All-Tournament honors with 41 kills and a .252 attack percentage on the weekend. She averaged 4.10 kills per set, and had 32 digs, including 10 against Creighton for her first double-double of the season.
