Highlights
- SMU, Tulsa and Wichita State each completed weekend sweeps on Sunday to start off 2-0 in conference play this year. UCF and Cincinnati join them at the top of The American standings, having won their only American match played so far this season. UConn and USF were also in the win column on Sunday after each team defeated an opponent on the road.
SMU 3, Temple 0
It was a clash between the 2017 second place teams, as SMU defended its home court in a 3-0 win over Temple to complete a weekend sweep for a 2-0 start in conference play. SMU’s Lexi Nordmann scored 10 kills, had three blocks and hit .500, committing just one error in 18 attempts. SMU won the third set, 25-22, getting six kills from Hannah Jacobs. The freshman entered the match midway through the third when Brittany Adams suffered an injury. Katerina Papazoglou led Temple with 13 kills, while graduate student Irem Asci had a double-double with 11 kills and 10 digs.
USF 3, North Florida 1
USF hit .337 in a sweep at North Florida to improve to 11-3 overall this season. Jac’cara Walker and Briana Stowell each had double-doubles in the nonconference win, as Nikkia Benitez led the way with 11 kills and a .391 clip.
Tulsa 3, Tulane 0
Tulsa defended its home court, as the Golden Hurricane swept Tulane to extend its winning streak to a perfect 5-0 mark at the Reynolds Center this year. Tulsa was one of three teams to finish the first weekend of conference play at 2-0. The match was a tight battle, as each set came down to at least the final five points. Three players reached double-digit kills, as outside hitter Emily Thorson led the way with 14 and a .324 hitting percentage. Mariah Pardo had a double-double of 36 assists and 11 digs.
Wichita State 3, Memphis 0
Wichita State remains undefeated in conference play since joining The American, extending its conference winning streak to 22 matches with a 3-0 win over Memphis. Megan Taflinger led the Shockers with 16 kills, while Tabitha Brown had 10 kills and 12 digs. Abby Pugh and Alex Koon each had five blocks. Sophomore libero Giorgia Civita reached the 1,000-dig milestone in the Shockers’ second victory of the weekend. For Memphis, Hannah Flowers and Kelsea Bivins each had double-digit kills, while setter Molly Murrihy had a double-double.
UConn 3, Houston 1
UConn had three players with double-digit kills on the way to defeating Houston in four sets for their first American Athletic Conference win on the season. Genna Florig led the way with a career-high 14 kills while hitting an impressive .619 (14-1-21) in the match. Florig also chipped in with five blocks. Caylee Parker led UConn with a 16-kill afternoon while adding seven digs and two blocks. The Cougars were held to hitting below .100, as Houston dropped its first four-set match of the season.
