Highlights
- UCF, Memphis and USF each picked up two wins to shine in a 12-7 Friday for American Athletic Conference volleyball teams. The league holds a .630 record against nonconference teams (63-37) in 2018, as nine of the 12 American programs possess winning records. The Week 3 action continues on Saturday with 13 more matches, including Temple taking on No. 21 Utah at 11 a.m. ET.
USF 3, George Washington 1 | USF 3, LIU Brooklyn
USF is off to a 3-0 Week 3 start in Brooklyn, after defeating George Washington and LIU Brooklyn in four-set matches. The Bulls will look to go 3-0 this weekend when they face Holy Cross Saturday at Noon ET. The team’s 7-1 start to the year ties the best eight-match start for the program since 2007. The Bulls used 12 aces to defeat the Colonials in the first match of the day. Clara Payne and Jaeden Brown each had 13 kills to lead the way. Against the Blackbirds, USF used balance to deliver the defending NEC champs and NCAA tournament participants their first home loss since Sept. 25, 2016. Three Bulls were in double-figure kills and four Bulls were in double-figure digs. Briana Stowell nearly achieved a triple-double with 44 assists, a career high eight kills and nine digs. Payne paced the Bulls with career bests of 15 kills and eight digs.
UCF 3, Florida International 0 | UCF 3, UIC 1
UCF is 2-0 through its first two 2018 home matches after sweeping Florida International and defeating UIC in four sets. Kristina Fisher led the charge in the Knights’ home-opener with 11 kills, while Kathryn Wesolich registered nine stuffs at the net in her first career outing. UCF carried the energy into its second match, hitting .325 on the way to victory. McKenna Melville had a double-double of 16 kills and 13 digs, while hitting .256 to lead the team. Anne-Marie Watson and Fisher each hit over .300, while gathering double-digit kills. The Knights conclude action at the UCF Challenge against Wofford Saturday at 2 p.m. ET.
Memphis 3, Louisiana Monroe 2 | Memphis 3, Tennessee Tech 1
Memphis enjoyed a 2-0 day to open action at the Tiger Invitational. Kelsea Bivins and Hannah Flowers had double-double performances to lead the Tigers to a come-from-behind 3-2 win over Louisiana Monroe to start the weekend off. Flowers tied career-highs in digs (12) and service aces (5) versus Louisiana Monroe. Freshman Molly Murrihy collected a career-best 47 assists. The Tigers followed the five-set win with a 3-1 victory over Tennessee Tech. Flowers hit .417 with 17 kills and nine digs. Bivins chipped in with a double-double of 15 kills and 11 digs. The Tigers finish up their tournament against North Alabama on Saturday at 7 p.m. ET.
Florida Atlantic 3, UConn 0 | UConn 3, DePaul 0
UConn split its two matches on the first day of the DePaul Invitational, falling 3-0 to Florida Atlantic then rebounding to beat the host Blue Demons, 3-0 in the final match of the night. The Huskies close out the tournament on Saturday with a match-up with Purdue Fort Wayne. The Huskies hit a season-best .462 in the win, posting 49 kills in 93 attempts with just six errors as a team. Iman McGary led the way with a 12 kill effort that also included five digs and a pair of blocks. McGary posted a .462 hitting percentage, coming up with 12 kills in 26 attempts with no errors.
Navy 3, Tulane 2 | Tulane 3, Rutgers 0
Tulane rebounded from its first five-set loss of the year with a sweep win over the host school Rutgers. Lexie Douglas, Erika Hansel and Makala Heidelberg had double-digit kills against Navy, recording 10, 12 and 13 respectively. Yvette Burcescu led the offense with 10 kills and a .429 hitting percentage in the win over Rutgers. The Green Wave wrap up their Week 3 tournament play against Howard at 11 a.m. ET.
Duke 3, Cincinnati 0 | Cincinnati 3, East Tennessee State 2
After falling to Duke, the Bearcats bounced back with their fourth five-set win of the season. The Bearcats outlasted Montana State, as Jordan Thompson surpassed the 30-kill mark for the third time in two weeks with 31, alongside a .300 hitting percentage clip. Cincinnati joins USF in going 4-0 in five-set matches this year. Armania Heckenmueller totaled 60 assists in the match and recorded a double-double with 11 digs. Cincinnati finishes its action in the Duke Invitational with a match against Coastal Carolina on Saturday at Noon ET.
ECU 3, Gardner-Webb 0 | Charlotte 3, ECU 0
ECU started off the day winning its 15th-straight set and seventh sweep of the season with a 3-0 win over Gardner-Webb. Each of ECU’s wins have been sweep victories. After downing Gardner-Webb 3-0 for its fifth-straight win, ECU could not pull off the doubleheader sweep as it fell to Charlotte in three sets in the tournament finale inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum. Natalie Tyson and Maggie Hallow each earned spots on the Pirate Invitational All-Tournament team.
UTSA 3, Houston 0 | Houston 3, Cornell 1
Houston saw its undefeated season come to an end on Friday, as the Cougars opened up play at the Flo Hyman Collegiate Cup by splitting their matches with UTSA and Cornell. In their first match against the Roadrunners, the Cougars fell in straight sets but responded in their contest with the Big Red, winning 3-1. Both of Houston's setters recorded double-doubles in the win over Cornell. Katie Krebs recorded her second double-double of the season and fourth of her career with 19 assists and 17 digs, while Abby Irvine finished with 26 assists and 11 digs for her second double-double of the season. Houston concludes its time at the Flo Hyman Collegiate Cup on Saturday, as the Cougars square off against Lamar and Houston Baptist.
Montana State 3, SMU 2
SMU dropped its fourth-straight match after getting edged by Montana State in five sets. Lexi Nordmann scored a career-high 16 kills to lead the Mustangs. Brittany Adams posted her first double-double of the season with 14 kills and 24 digs, and Meryn Kennedy tallied 10 kills. SMU plays its final match at the Fight in the Fort tournament Saturday at Noon ET against Louisiana.
High Point 3, Temple 0
After falling to High Point, Temple will look to snap a six-match setback when it faces No. 21 Utah on Saturday at 11 a.m. ET. Temple out-hit (.277-.269), out-dug (38-34), and out-blocked (10-5) High Point, but the Panthers made keys runs when they needed to account for the win. Freshman Peyton Boyd racked up seven kills, while hitting .500, with five blocks.
Tulsa 3, Abilene Christian 2
Tulsa outlasted Abilene Christian in its first five-set thriller of the season. Emily Thorson, Rachel Moore and Mariah Pardo each had a double-double. Thorson knocked down 27 kills and had 11 digs while hitting .260. Moore hit .333 with 20 kills and 17 digs. Pardo guided the offense with 59 assists and 12 digs. The Golden Hurricane host Northwestern State and Oral Roberts on Saturday.
