Highlights
- UCF, Memphis, USF and Tulsa each completed weekend sweeps, as The American’s teams went 10-3 against nonconference foes on Saturday. The league improves to 73-40 (.646) against other conferences this season. Ten of the conference’s 12 teams possess winning records with Houston (11-1) and USF (8-1) holding the top winning percentages in the league. Week 3 action wraps up tomorrow, as Temple faces Villanova and Wichita State takes on No. 14 Creighton on Fox Sports Go.
No. 21 Utah 3, Temple 2
Temple (1-7) nearly pulled off an upset over No. 21 Utah, suffering another heartbreaking 3-2 loss in day two action at the Villanova Classic. The Owls led 2-1, but came up just short in the fifth set, 15-8. Temple out-blocked Utah, 12-10. Iva Deak knocked down a career-high 15 kills, hitting .520. She also tallied a collegiate-best seven digs to go along with five blocks.
Tulane 3, Howard 0
Tulane (8-3) swept Howard in the team's final match of the tournament, going 2-1 on the weekend to win the Rutgers Invitational. Howard is the reigning MEAC champion and took a trip to the 2017 NCAA tournament. Libero Kaylie McHugh, finished the weekend with a team-high 58 digs and was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament, while Yvette Burcescu tallied 26 kills and nine blocks, earning a spot on the All-Tournament team.
SMU 3, Louisiana 0
SMU (2-6) defeated Louisiana in straight sets Saturday. Senior Brittany Adams posted her second-consecutive double-double with 14 kills and 11 digs to lead the Mustangs. Lexi Nordmann and Rachel Woulfe were named to the Fight in the Fort All-Tournament team. Woulfe scored 30 kills with a .304 attack percentage in three matches, while Nordmann averaged 1.08 blocks per set with 13 total and scored 28 kills.
USF 3, Holy Cross 0
USF (8-1) hit .278, winning its first three-set victory of the year over Holy Cross to go a perfect 3-0 at this weekend's Blackbird Invitational, hosted by LIU Brooklyn. The 8-1 start to the year is the best for the program since 1996. Payne led USF with 36 kills in Brooklyn, swinging .357.
Cincinnati 3, Coastal Carolina 2
Cincinnati (6-2) is 5-1 in five-set matches this season after winning its second-straight 3-2 match, outlasting Coastal Carolina to close out the Duke Invitational. Cincinnati’s front line had a big day with a season-high 14 blocks. Jordan Thompson led with a double-double, finishing with 25 kills and 12 digs. She also had four blocks. Armania Heckenmueller totaled 42 assists with nine digs and three aces.
Tulsa 3, Northwestern State 0 | Tulsa 3, Oral Roberts 1
Tulsa (7-2) went 2-0 on the final day of its home tournament, completing a weekend sweep at the Tulsa Volleyball Invitational, defeating Northwestern State 3-0 and in-town rivals Oral Roberts, 3-1. Rachel Moore recorded her second double-double of the day against the Golden Eagles, tallying 11 kills and 15 digs, and was named tournament MVP. Libero Taylor Horsfall joined her in earning a spot on the All-Tournament team.
Houston 3, Lamar 1 | Houston 3, Houston Baptist 1
Houston (11-1) continued its hot start to the 2018 campaign with victories over Lamar and Houston Baptist on the final day of the Flo Hyman Collegiate Cup. At the conclusion of the tournament Faith Squier and Kendall Haywood were named to the All-Tournament team for their performances throughout the weekend. Having played in all 15 sets in the tournament, both Squier and Haywood were some of the most efficient hitters in the field, each posting a hitting percentage above the .340 mark. Haywood also finished the weekend tallying eight solo blocks.
Fort Wayne 3, UConn 2
UConn (6-4) lost a hard fought five-set battle with Purdue Fort Wayne on the final day of the DePaul Invitational. UConn rookie Caylee Parker notched her fourth double-double effort of the season. She posted a season-high 26 kills and picked-up 15 digs along with a pair of blocks and a service ace. She was joined by senior setter Emma Turner who joined her in the double-double column, recording her team-leading sixth on the season. Turner finished with 34 assists and had 16 digs on the defensive end.
UCF 3, Wofford 0
UCF (6-3) completed a sweep at the UCF Challenge to open its home slate with a 3-0 record after a 3-0 win over Wofford. McKenna Melville hit .483 with 17 kills to lead the offense, while Erin Olson picked up a double-double. The team enjoyed a .353 hitting percentage.
Memphis 3, North Alabama 0
Memphis (6-5) won the Tiger Invitational, as Natalie Benson served a career-high six aces to lead the Tigers to a 3-0 victory over North Alabama to complete the weekend sweep. Hannah Flowers was named the Tiger Invitational Most Outstanding Player, and Kelsea Bivins and Kelsey Walter were named to the All-Tournament team. The Tigers recorded 14 aces, which are the most recorded in a three-set match in conference history. Flowers had her eighth-straight double-figure kills match this season with 10.
Iowa State 3, Wichita State 1
Iowa State hit .299 on the way to a 3-1 win over Wichita State (4-3) at the Bluejay Invitational. Megan Taflinger led the Shockers with 16 kills and hit .333, while Emma Wright added 10 kills. Kali Eaken had 24 assists and Giorgia Civita added 22 digs. The Shockers are next in action on Sun., Sept. 9 at No. 14 Creighton at 2 p.m.
