Highlights
-Wichita State enjoyed a successful start to the indoor campaign at the Shocker Multi meet in Wichita, Kansas. Claudia Rojo won the women’s pentathlon during her first start of the season, racking up 3,754 points and taking the 60-meter hurdles in 8.81, the long jump with a top effort of 5.52m/18-1.5 and the 800-meter run in a time of 2:23.45. Kendra Henry finished as the runner-up to Rojo (3,542 points) while winning the shot put (top throw of 12.13m/39-9.75) and the high jump (cleared 1.64m/5-4.45). In the men’s heptathlon at the Shocker Multi, Tanner Brown was the winner of the men’s heptathlon as an unattached competitor. Brown scored 5,093 points and logged individual wins in the 60-meter dash (6.85) and the 1000-meter run (2:45.73). Clay Eckert finished third competing for Wichita State (4,794 points), tying for the event win in the pole vault (4.30m/14-1.25) and finishing as the runner-up in the 1000-meter run (2:47.27). Elsewhere, Wichita State women’s standouts Winny Koskei (16:16.75) and Rebekah Topham (16:33.29) ran in the 5000-meter run at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener at Boston University.
-Houston gathered in six event wins and a program record to jumpstart the new indoor season at the Texas A&M Reveille Invitational in College Station, Texas. Miles Marhofer won his debut at weight throw for the Cougars, establishing a program record on his fourth attempt with a throw of 20.83m/68-4.25). Nora Monie added a shot put win to the Houston ledger by taking the title with a mark of 15.94m/52-3.75. Naomi Taylor notched the top time in the 60-meter hurdles (8.31) to take the event title, with Priscilla Adejokun turning in a top attempt in the weight throw of 20.50m/67-3.25 for another Cougar win. Terence Ware took the win in the men’s 60-meter dash with a time of 6.797, while Antonio Ruiz picked up an additional event victory in the pole vault by clearing 5.30m/17-4.50.
-Hannah Miller was the lone SMU athlete who competed at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener at BU and made an impact in the process. Miller established a program record in the 5000-meter run with a time of 16:06.14 to take second place in her second section, and her time bested her previous PR of 16:16.84 that was set at last season’s American Athletic Conference Indoor Championships.
-Temple sent competitors to a pair of meets to open the indoor slate, traveling first to the Faststrack Season Opener in Staten Island, New York. Marissa White took first place in the 400-meter dash (55.76), Alisha Brown claimed the high jump (1.70m) and Candus Burks won the triple jump (10.87m) for the Owls. At the Bill Ward Invitational the following day, Brown won the high jump for the second time on the weekend with a top effort of 1.75m and Burks claimed her second win in as many days by taking the long jump (5.25m). Mallorie Smith raced to victory in the 400-meter dash (57.47), and Lexi Walsh was victorious in the 3000-meter run (10:52.30).
-Tulsa was the beneficiary of a standout performance from Carsyn Spurgeon to key the Golden Hurricane at the Crimson & Gold Invitational in Pittsburg, Kansas. Spurgeon won the long jump with a school-record effort of 6.08m/19-11.5. Other event winners on the women’s side for Tulsa included Jaidyn McCallon in the 300-meter dash (39.47), Allison Bailey in the 600-yard run (1:23.64) and Kinga Parrish in the 800-meter run (2:17.33). Top men’s performers for the Golden Hurricane included Henry Visser in fourth in the 300-meter dash (34.68) and seventh in the 60-meter dash (8.37), with Mason Walters in sixth in the mile with a time of 4:23.92.
-UConn received a strong opening performance from Jordan Torney in a runner-up effort at the UConn Multi-Event Challenge in Storrs, Connecticut. Torney scored a total of 5,423 points in the heptathlon and was the event winner of the 60-meter dash (7.05), the long jump (7.13m/23-4.75) and the 60-meter hurdles (8.29). Benjamin Grosse finished fourth overall (4,851 points) and picked up a win in the high jump (1.99m/6-6.25). On the women’s side, the Huskies enjoyed a successful debut at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener at BU. Jiana Baker (60-meter dash, 7.74), Shanelle Coleman (200-meter dash, 24.73) and Shauntae Nelson (400-meter dash, 56.14) all racked up event wins for UConn.
-Cincinnati got off to a fast start to the new season at the Jingle Bells Open in Lexington, Kentucky. Chris Borzar ran the fastest 500-meter dash for a Bearcat runner since 1986 (1:03.19) to win the event, while Logan Baker added a PR of 2:34.55 to win the 1000-meter run. Connor Duricky was the top collegiate finisher in the 60-meter hurdles with a runner-up time of 7.92. Kennedy Marable earned a win in the triple jump with a top mark of 12.05m/39-6.50) for the Cincinnati women’s squad, as Faith Banks secured a runner-up plaudit in the 500-meter dash (1:13.96).
-Memphis kicked off the indoor campaign by taking part in the BSC Panther Indoor Icebreaker in Birmingham, Alabama. Jordan Wesner (high jump, 2.16m/7-1), Jason Machairas (shot put, 17.74m/58-2.5) and Adar Sheere (weight throw, 18.27m/63-9) notched individual wins for the Tiger men in their season debut. DeeNia McMiller shattered her own school record in the weight throw, posting a 22.20m/72-10 top effort for the event win for Memphis on Friday night. Other individual event winners on the women’s side for the Tigers included Ladasia Walton (high jump, 1.70m,/5-7) and Mona Jaidi (shot put, 14.48m/49-5).
-Tulane joined Memphis at the BSC Panther Indoor Icebreaker and earned an event win by Kyah Loyd in the 60-meter hurdles, with Loyd notching a victorious time of 8.63. Olivia Hicks turned in a runner-up effort in the high jump (1.65m/5-5), and Trina Malej added a second-place result of her own in the triple jump (12.13m/39-9.75). Nastjia Modic also placed second with an average height of 3.80m/12-5.5 in the pole vault.
