The Huskies started the season 2-0 for the first time since 2013 with a pair of wins on Friday, defeating Bryant in their opener 11-0 before a 3-2 victory over Michigan State in the second game of the day. Against Bryant, UConn scored four runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back, as three players - Briana Marcelino (1 RBI), Carli Cutler (2 RBI) and Kiwi McDaniel (2 RBI) all finished with two hits and Katie Koshes earned her first win of the season in the circle with eight strikeouts in five innings.
Against Michigan State, Cutler provided a clutch, two-out RBI single in the seventh to push UConn ahead for good after the Spartans had just tied the game in the bottom of the sixth. Cutler, McDaniel, Chloe Kerns (1 RBI) and Samantha Barnett all recorded a pair of hits and Jill Stockley earned the complete game victory in the circle after allowing three hits and striking out four batters.
ECU 11, Youngstown State 4; ECU 9, Miami (Ohio) 1
ECU pounded out 20 runs on 23 hits to post a doubleheader sweep of Youngstown State and Miami (Ohio), defeating the Penguins 11-4 in their season opener before turning right around and notching a 9-1, five-inning triumph over the Redhawks.
Tate McClellan led the offensive charge with three hits, two runs scored, three walks and seven RBI in the two contests while Tyler King went 5-for-7 with six runs scored and four stolen bases. ECU clubbed four home runs in the sweep - a pair by McClellan in the first game and one each from Morgan Halo and Logan Wood. Rachel McCollum was 3-for-5 with two RBI in her Pirate debut against Youngstown State.
Whitney Sanford recorded the win over the Penguins, allowing three runs on five hits with six walks and four strikeouts in six innings of work. Erin Poepping went the distance versus Miami (ohio), surrendering just one unearned run on two hits with five strikeouts and no walks in five innings pitched.
Wichita State 6, Central Michigan 2; Virginia Tech 11, Wichita State 3
Wichita State won its first game of the season, defeating Central Michigan 6-2 at the Cougar Classic on Friday morning before falling 11-3 against Virginia Tech later in the afternoon. Caitlin Bingham pitched a career-high seven innings in the opener, striking out four batters in her first complete game, while Neleigh Herring tallied two hits and a career-high four RBI, hitting her first career home run in the process. Asea Webber also collected two hits, adding an RBI of her own, and Madison Perrigan notched a hit and RBI as well.
In the second game, Sydney McKinney led the way for the Shockers with a pair of hits, while Perrigan doubled and had two RBI. Bailey Lange took the loss in the circle, giving up seven runs on seven hits in 1 1/3 innings of work.
Memphis 10, Bryant 2; FIU 2, Memphis 1
Memphis kicked off the 2019 season Friday afternoon with a split against Bryant and FIU. The Tigers won game one of the day against the Bulldogs by a score of 10-2 before dropping the afternoon contest to the host Panthers by a 2-1 margin. Five players had multi-hit games in the win over Bryant, and Baylee Smith finished with a career-high four RBI in the opener. Delaney Smith was one of five players with hits in both games, while Ashley Threatt, Samantha Ibison and Gracie Morton all finished with three hits across the two games.
In the circle, Karli Perque earned the win against Bryant with a six inning complete game, allowing three hits and two runs while striking out seven batters. Mariah Nichols took the tough luck loss against FIU after scattering six hits over six innings and allowing two runs (one earned) with a pair of strikeouts.
Bucknell 4, Tulsa 2; LSU 11, Tulsa 0
Tulsa dropped a pair of games on the second day of the Tiger Classic, falling 4-2 against Bucknell before an 11-0 setback against No. 11 LSU on Friday. In the opener, Chenise Delce allowed just one earned run and struck out nine in her collegiate debut, but Bucknell scored three unearned runs in the third to register a 4-2 victory.
Haley Meinen and Morgan Neal led the Tulsa offense as each went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Julia Hollingsworth and Tori Stafford also recorded two hits as the Hurricane out-hit the Bison, but left 10 runners on base. Against LSU, Julia Hollingsworth and Chenise Delce each had hits for the Golden Hurricane, while Kassidy Scott recorded three strikeouts in four innings in the circle.
Houston 4, Kentucky 3; Oklahoma State 5, Houston 1
Houston opened its 2019 campaign by splitting its games against a pair of ranked opponents on Friday at Cougar Softball Stadium, beginning the season taking down No. 13 Kentucky, 4-3, before falling, 5-1, to No. 22 Oklahoma State.
Over the course of both games, Savannah Heebner went 2-for-6 with an RBI. Against the Wildcats, she tossed a complete game and struck out three batters. Sarah Barker scored the Cougars' lone run against the Cowgirls, courtesy of an RBI from sophomore utility Tierrah Williams. That game also saw Trystan Melancon punch out seven batters.
Minnesota 7, UCF 0
UCF couldn't push across runs after a late string of hits in the sixth inning as No. 21 Minnesota defeated the Knights 7-0 in Orlando. Tamesha Glover, Kyra Klarkowski and Karissa Ornelas each had one hit for UCF, who saw Minnesota score runs in five different innings. In the circle, Breanna Vasquez took the loss, allowing four runs on five hits with three strikeouts over four innings of work.
Arizona 4, USF 0
Riley Gore homered in her first at-bat as a Bull, but USF couldn't complete the comeback in a 4-1 loss to No. 7 Arizona on Friday night. Gore got the Bulls on the scoreboard in the third inning after Arizona pulled ahead with three runs in the top of the same frame. Lindsey Devitt and Bethaney Keen produced USF's other two hits. Nicole Doyle took the loss in the circle for the Bulls, allowing three runs on three hits with a pair of walks and five strikeouts in four innings of work.
