South Carolina 8, USF 1; USF 5, Ball State 2
USF split the first day of weekend action, falling to South Carolina 8-1 before a 5-2 victory over Ball State. Georgina Corrick had double-digits in strikeouts for her second straight game, recording 10 strikeouts against Ball State.
Brooke Leistl had two hits against South Carolina, while Macy Cook had an RBI base hit. Cheyenne Eggens took the loss after giving up three runs on five hits in 1.1 innings. Meghan Sheehan had three hits to pace the offense in the Ball State win, while AnaMarie Bruni and Megan Pierro each had two hits. Corrick picked up her sixth win of the year in the complete game victory, allowing four hits and two runs with the 10 strikeouts.
ECU 11, Columbia 0 (5 innings)
ECU plated three runs in the first inning against Columbia Friday afternoon and cruised to its first shutout victory of the season in an 11-0 five-inning decision over the Lions to begin the Purple-Gold Invitational at the ECU Softball Stadium. The Pirates were to take on Winthrop Friday evening, but that game was called off due to inclement weather and will not be made up this weekend.
Tyler King and Logan Wood rapped out three hits each while Ashleigh Inae and Olivia Narron contributed two apiece. Wood and Tate McClellan also posted three RBI each. Erin Poepping was sharp in victory, tossing four innings and surrendering no runs on just one hit with three strikeouts against no walks.
Northern Illinois 10, Tulsa 4; Illinois 6, Tulsa 4
Mikayla Whitten homered and drove in three runs on the day, but Tulsa fell to UNI and Illinois by scores of 10-4 and 6-4, respectively, on Friday at the Collins Family Softball Complex.
Northern Iowa broke open a close game with seven runs over the final three innings to take the opening game of the day, 10-4. Julia Hollingsworth went 3-for-3 in the contest, while Mikayla Whitten went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI. Chenise Delce took the loss in the circle as she allowed four earned runs over 6.2 innings to go along with six strikeouts. Against Illinois, Tulsa rallied with back-to-back homers in the bottom of the seventh, but it was not enough to come all the way back. Rylie Spell and Mikayla Whitten each had a pair of hits in the game, while Samantha Pochop allowed three earned runs, but took the loss in the circle.
Memphis 5, Sam Houston State 3
Memphis started the Blues City Classic on the right foot with a 5-3 victory over Sam Houston State Friday afternoon. The Tigers took an early lead over the Bearkats and added to it with Alyssa Dean's first collegiate home run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Bayleigh Wisher earned the start against Sam Houston State and put in 4.2 innings of work in the win. Ryleigh Aungst led Memphis with two hits and Dean's home run drove in a team-high three runs. Wisher struck out three while not allowing a walk.
Houston 10, Texas State 0; DePaul 2, Houston 0
Houston opened up the Red and White Showcase on Friday with a 10-0 win over Texas State before falling to DePaul by a score of 2-0. Against Texas State, the Cougars had four players tally multiple hits. Arielle James tied a career-high three RBI with her three-run shot in the third inning. On the rubber, Presley Bell threw her third shutout of the season, surrendering just one hit in the process.
In the nighttime contest with the Blue Demons, Savannah Heebner tossed her eighth complete-game of the year, striking out seven batters and allowing no walks in the loss. Offensively, Houston was held to three hits - one each from Lindsey Stewart, Sarah Queen and Aspen Howie.
UCF 10, Dartmouth 0 (5 innings); UCF 2, Toledo 1 (8 innings)
UCF picked up a pair of wins at home Friday after taking down Dartmouth, 10-0 in five innings followed by a win against Toledo, 2-1 in eight innings to start the UCF Invitational. Alea White tossed a complete game shutout against Dartmouth and allowed just three hits, while striking out eight. Breanna Vasquez tossed the second game of the evening giving up just three hits and striking out eight Rockets.
UCF was led offensively by Jazmine Esparza, who delivered the game-winning hit against the Rockets. Esparza went 3-for-3 in the first game with a triple and two RBI. She finished the night 4-for-7 and three RBI. Erin Emanuel went 2-for-3 against Dartmouth and brought in a pair of runs. She collected two runs scored and three total bases.
