05.18.19

Houston’s Presley Bell tossed a two-hitter on Saturday afternoon as the Cougars downed Sam Houston State 5-0 to advance to Sunday’s Austin Regional final against host Texas with a spot in next week’s NCAA Super Regionals on the line.

Tulsa’s season came to a close Saturday afternoon after scoring in the top of the first, only to see Oklahoma State respond with a pair of runs to hand the Golden Hurricane a 2-1 loss in the NCAA Stillwater Regional final. USF fell to Tallahassee Regional host Florida State on Saturday afternoon, 12-1, before falling 2-1 in extra innings to South Carolina in an elimination game Saturday night to see its season come to a close.

Sunday’s regional final appearance will be the first for the Cougars since 2011 and will be The American’s eighth regional final, joining UCF (2014, 2015, 2016), USF (2014), Tulsa (2017, 2019) and Wichita State (2018).

Houston will face No. 9-national seed Texas tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. ET/3:30 p.m. CT on Longhorn Network. If necessary, a winner-take-all game is slated for approximately 7 p.m. ET/6 p.m. CT. Houston is 2-0 in the regional, while Texas is 1-1 after losing its opening game of the regional to Sam Houston State on Friday.

In Austin, Bell took a no-hitter into the bottom of the fifth inning against Sam Houston State, finishing the afternoon with a pair of strikeouts and the two hits allowed with zero walks. Lindsey Stewart’s solo homer in the fifth inning was part of a three-run frame for the Cougars, who added to the advantage with a two-out, two-run double in the top of the seventh from Tierrah Williams. American Player of the Year Sarah Barker posted a game-high three hits to go along with her two runs scored.

Tulsa jumped ahead with a run in the top of the first inning in Stillwater against Oklahoma State when Julia Hollingsworth led off the game with a double down the left field line and scored on Alexis Perry's groundout. Oklahoma State responded with two-out RBI hits in the third and fourth frames that proved to be the difference. Hollingsworth and Rylie Spell each finished with two hits, while Chenise Delce took the loss after giving up two runs on six hits in six innings of work.

Tallahassee Regional host Florida State scored multiple runs in three different innings Saturday afternoon to push USF into an elimination contest with South Carolina. In the opener, Georgina Corrick allowed six runs on five walks in 2.1 innings of work, while Meghan Sheehan and Lindsey Devitt hit back-to-back singles and a double-steal got Sheehan home for the Bulls’ lone run. In their nightcap, the Bulls struck in the first inning on Devitt’s solo homer before South Carolina responded with a run in the top of the second. The score remained at 1-all until the 10th, when South Carolina hit a go-ahead homer that would end the USF season. AnaMarie Bruni had a game-high three hits and Devitt added two, while Corrick tossed 10 innings, allowing two runs with seven strikeouts.
