Highlights
Memphis 2, Milwaukee 1
In its first test away from home, the Memphis men's soccer team took a 2-1 win in the Soccer for a Cure Classic in Birmingham, Ala., Friday afternoon.
A first half goal from Jovan Prado and a second half penalty score from Sam Ashton propelled the Tigers to the victory over the Milwaukee Panthers.
Prado netted the first goal of the match in the closing minutes of the first half, putting in a goal after receiving a cross from Gurman Sangha. The freshman mid's score was his second goal of the season.
Milwaukee was eventually able to even things up with a score in the 63rd minute after a tough battle for possession near the Memphis goal.
The Tigers were quick to respond to the equalizer, as 10 minutes later, Ashton drove into the box and was fouled by the keeper, earning the Tigers' second PK of the season. With a chance and the ability to put Memphis back on top, the senior stepped up and knocked home the game-winner.
USF 2, Marquette 1
Trey Jackson scored the game winner, and Victor Claudel netted his first career goal, as the USF men's soccer team notched its first win of 2019 with a 2-1 victory over Marquette in its home opener on Friday night. The Bulls improve to 1-1 on the year while the Golden Eagles drop to 1-1-1.
Despite the one goal advantage, USF dominated the match on both ends, outshooting Marquette 26-9 while not giving the Golden Eagles many chances on their offensive end of the pitch.
Claudel tallied the first goal of the year for the Bulls in the 10' when he took a pass from Henrique Gallina – who served it up from midfield – and beat the Marquette defender, then goalkeeper Jackson Weyman, giving USF a 1-0 edge.
It wouldn't be until the 79' that the Golden Eagles tied the game at one-all on a goal by Alex Mirsberger. Jackson, however, didn't wait long to put the Bulls back on top beating Weyman, from five yards out, in the 82' off a pass from Jonathan Rosales for the winner.
Fairleigh Dickinson 2, UConn 1
The 23rd-ranked UConn men's soccer team suffered its first setback of the season, dropping a 2-1 decision to Farleigh Dickinson Friday night at Al-Marzook Field.
UConn came out of the gates extremely aggressive as they controlled the possession for the majority of the opening 20 minutes. The Huskies broke through in the 19th minute on Jordan Hall's sixth strike of the season, assisted by Dayonn Harris and freshman Thomas Decottignies. Harris, racing down the far sideline, sent a cross towards Decottignies and the Frenchman touch-passed the ball back to Hall, who capped off the play to give the Huskies a 1-nil advantage at 18:21.
FDU answered back at 27:55 with a goal from Adrian Barajas, then took a 2-1 lead following Diego Arribas' tally at 30:55.
Xavier 2, Cincinnati 1
University of Cincinnati men's soccer's second-half comeback hopes were cut short Friday night in a 2-1 loss to the visiting No. 10 Xavier Musketeers at historic Nippert Stadium.
In front of a sizeable crowd of 2,072 fans, the Bearcats (1-2) got behind 2-0 to the Musketeers (3-0) after one half of play. UC once again showed its resiliency, pulling within a goal in the 64th minute on a freshman Kyle Healy header off of a senior Donovan Segree corner kick.
Armed with some momentum, the Red & Black continued to push forward down the stretch in search of the equalizer. Tries from junior Darryn Commissiong and senior Rex Epps in the 80th and 82nd minutes proved untrue as Xavier escaped Clifton with the victory.
XU got on the board in a hurry with a goal just over a minute into the match. The Bearcats fell victim again in the 33rd minute when a misplayed ball in the UC box led to an easy Muskies score. The Red & Black nearly picked up a goal before halftime when Epps bounced a ball from close range off the near post – a play that would prove to be symbolic of the Bearcats' night.
UCF 2, Penn State 2
The No. 15 UCF men's soccer team tied the Penn State Nittany Lions by a score of 2-2 on Friday night to move the Black and Gold's record on the season to 1-1-1.
The action started early with a Cal Jennings goal in the 15th minute off a quick feed from Hattabiou Barry. The feed came from the left wing and was perfectly slotted into the box for Jennings to punch it home.
Penn State struck back in the 31st minute with a goal of their own on a penalty kick from the foot of Aaron Molloy after a hard foul near the box.
The score only remained tied at 1-1 for a bit as Jennings netted his second of the night for UCF. He was in perfect position to take off and run on an errant pass from a Penn State defender roughly 30 yards out. After Jennings possessed the ball, he was all by himself with just the goalkeeper to beat. There was a defender in Jennings' hip pocket which forced him out wide to the right post, where he ripped a shot and glanced the ball off the top of the goalkeeper's hands and into the top shelf to give the Knights a 2-1 lead.
UCF took their first halftime lead of the season into the locker room hoping to come away with their first home win of the season. Penn State had other ideas as they scored a goal from beyond 30 yards on a perfectly placed shot over the head of UCF goalkeeper Yannik Oettl.
From there, the scoresheet remained empty, although UCF tried their hardest to crack the tie late in the match. The Knights fired 10 shots toward the Penn State goalkeeper with six of them on target.
Kentucky 2, Tulsa 0
The Tulsa men's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to #2 Kentucky on Friday night at the Wendell & Vickie Bell Soccer Complex in Lexington, Ky. TU fell to 2-1 on the season, while UK moved to 2-1 overall.

Thomas Wells had a team-best three shots for the Golden Hurricane, while four other players had one attempt. Bryson Reed played all 90 minutes in goal and picked up one save.
Tulsa had a 7-5 lead in shots and a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks, while Kentucky had a 3-2 edge in shots on goal.
SMU 2, Saint Louis 0
Eddie Munjoma scored in the 3rd and 51st minutes to register his first career multi-goal game en route to a win vs .Saint Louis - propelling the SMU Mustangs to a 3-0-0 start for the sixth time since 2000.
The first shot of the game was a result of a foul drawn by Garrett McLaughlin, who was tackled just outside the box. Munjoma lined up to take the set piece and just like he did against HBU earlier in the week, bent his shot around the wall, freezing the goalkeeper and tallying a goal.
SMU would never surrender the lead, as sophomore Shane Lanson earned a clean sheet in his first career start at SMU. Assisting Lanson in the Mustangs' defensive third was Brandon Terwege, who made his first start since transferring from UCLA.
The Mustangs outshot the Billikens 7-4 in the first half and came out of halftime on the attack.
In the 51st minute, Nick Taylor beat his defender before passing back to Knut Ahlander who then served a cross to the back post where Munjoma was awaiting the ball. In an attempt to play the ball across the face of the goal, Munjoma's shot squeezed through the keeper's legs and found the back of the net, giving the Mustangs a commanding 2-0 lead.
The win marks the team's seventh in eight games, dating back to last season - with the lone loss coming to Oregon State in the 2018 NCAA tournament.
Villanova 1, Temple 0
The Temple men's soccer team lost a hard-fought, 1-0 battle to the undefeated Villanova Wildcats on Saturday afternoon in Villanova, Pa. The Owls drop to 0-3 against three perennially tough opponents, while the Wildcats extent their win-streak to three to start the season.
Despite generating countless threatening opportunities, Villanova got on the board in the 68th minute. The game-winner came off the boot of Seidu Shamsudeen, who helped the Wildcats extend their win-streak to three with three-straight shutouts.
Simon Lefebvre was phenomenal in net for the Owls, posting five saves between the posts in an action-filled game on both ends of the field. The back line of Pierre Cayet, Brandon Johnson, Mickael Borger and Esteban Suarez also showed many glimpses of greatness, working well as a unit to deny a contingent of skillful Villanova players.
