SMU and Wichita State picked up wins in the American/SEC Alliance, while USF and Tulane picked up conference wins in American Athletic Conference men's basketball action on Saturday (Jan. 4).

Georgia 65, No. 9/11 Memphis 62 - Box Score

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- Tom Crean and Georgia finally grabbed a win over an AP Top 25 team despite the Bulldogs' two leading scorers struggling with their shooting.

Rayshaun Hammonds had 15 points and 12 rebounds, and Anthony Edwards added 13 points as Georgia ended No. 9 Memphis' 10-game winning streak, beating the Tigers 65-62 on Saturday.

It was the first time the Bulldogs had defeated a top-10 team since 2011 and their first road win over a top-10 team since 2004. Two of Georgia's three losses this season were to ranked opponents, Michigan State and Dayton.

''We're very proud of this win,'' Crean said. ''And we did it against a heck of a team. That was a big, big win for us.''

Hammonds went 7 of 18 from the field for Georgia and Edwards was 4 of 17. But the Bulldogs got help from Donnell Gresham Jr. (12 points) and Sahvir Wheeler (10 points, seven assists).

''It was a team victory and so many guys did different things to impact the game,'' Crean said.

Precious Achiuwa led Memphis (12-2) with 20 points and 15 rebounds, while Alex Lomax finished with 11 points. Boogie Ellis scored 10 for the Tigers, who lost for the first time since Nov. 12 to Oregon. Forward DJ Jeffries, who averages 12 points, was held out with an illness.

The game was close throughout with 10 ties and 20 lead changes. Neither team could build a lead of more than eight points. But it also was sloppy with turnovers - Memphis committing 22, Georgia 17 - and neither team shot better than 40%.

''Neither team played a great game, a pretty game,'' Crean said, ''but (it was) a hard-played game. We were fortunate to get the win.''

The key was Georgia (10-3) closing the game on a 6-1 run as both teams missed opportunities down the stretch. Memphis did not score a basket after Achiuwa's 3-pointer with 4:35 remaining.

''We had a couple of chances to knock them out,'' Memphis coach Penny Hardaway said. ''We went up seven one time, and eight the next time, and just couldn't do it. When you let a team hang around, this is what can happen.''

Achiuwa and sophomore guard Alex Lomax (11 points, four assists) noted the scoring drought in the closing minutes was as much about inexperience for a young team than anything else.

''I feel like that was a game we could have won. It just came down to the last four minutes,'' Achiuwa said. ''We have to follow (the game plan) every time down the stretch. The last four minutes, that's kind of what happened. We lost focus, and this is a good learning experience moving on.''

USF 75, UConn 60 - Box Score

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- UConn and USF were both coming off disappointing conference opening losses.

USF rebounded quickly while the Huskies struggled again.

Laquincy Rideau had 17 points and six assists, David Collins scored 15 points, and South Florida beat UConn 75-60 on Saturday.

The Bulls (8-7, 1-1 American) also got 12 points and nine rebounds from Michael Durr. USF lost 82-64 to SMU on Wednesday.

''I'm really pleased with the response,'' South Florida's Brian Gregory said. ''It's a great win for us. It showed why and how we can win.''

James Bouknight had 11 points for UConn (9-5, 0-2 American), which was coming off a 67-51 loss at Cincinnati on Wednesday night.

''When you don't have a guy in the program that's ever had a winning season and things start going sideways, it's hard to have that strong leadership presence as a player, '' UConn coach Dan Hurley said. '''Hey, get behind me, follow me, I know how this is suppose to go' and then that runs through a team. I think that's a large part of what you've seen here the last two days.''

''I don't think it's any of the player's fault, I don't think it's any of our fault,'' Hurley added. ''We've just got a long way to go as a program. here.''

UConn senior guard Christian Vital had nine points. He's averaging 13.8.

The Huskies got within 12 with eight minutes remaining but Rideau's layup completed a 7-0 run that made it 70-51.

''We picked up defense,'' said Rideau, who also had eight rebounds.

UConn finished 6 for 16 from 3-point range, but missed all six tries in the second half.

Justin Brown put USF ahead 53-38 on a 3-pointer with 15 1/2 minutes to play.

South Florida went 21 of 29 from the free-throw line. UConn made 10 of 16.

Rashun Williams extended the Bulls lead to 61-42 midway through the second half. That surge came during a four-minute scoreless stretch by UConn.

Rideau had 13 points as USF took a 39-32 halftime advantage. He had a 3-point play and added a layup during a 12-2 run that put the Bulls up 39-29.

Alterique Gilbert cut the UConn deficit to seven on a long-range jumper with 9 seconds left in the first half.

''This game is a lot about confidence,'' Hurley said. ''It's about putting the last game behind you. We've got to spend a lot of time soul searching and a lot time trying to repair the psyche of the number of the guys that have been struggling.''

No. 24/23 Wichita State 74, Ole Miss 54 - Box Score

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) -- After his team’s victory on Wednesday, Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall said he loved everything about the play of sophomore guard Erik Stevenson this season with one caveat.

“I’d like him to shoot a little better percentage,” Marshall said. “I’d like to see that.”

Stevenson had quite the response on Saturday, going 9 of 15 from the floor on his way to a career-high 29 points to propel No. 24 Wichita State past Ole Miss 74-54.

Stevenson had to cool down to shoot 60 percent after making eight of his first 11 shots. His 19 first-half points gave Wichita State (13-1, 1-0 American) 39-24 halftime lead.

“It kind of felt like high school,” said Stevenson, who was 5 of 11 from the three-point line. “That’s a good team, obviously a tough ballclub, but it feels good to get a good win. And put on a show.”

Jamarius Burton scored 16 points, and Grant Sherfield added 10 for the Shockers.

“It was a special night for Erik,” Marshall said. “I thought he and (Burton) were the two toughest guys on the court.”

Khadim Sy and Devontae Shuler each scored 12 points for Ole Miss (9-4, 0-0 SEC).

Rebels coach Kermit Davis said Stevenson was a big concern coming into the game, the Shocker that stood out most as he watched tape on Wichita State.

“I can only imagine how competitive he is in practices,” Davis said admiringly.

Stevenson had six rebounds and three steals, but his shooting was the highlight on Saturday.

Stevenson entered the game shooting 39.9 percent from the floor and 34.2 percent from the 3-point line this season. On Saturday, he was hunting shots as the hot hand.

About the only thing that slowed down Stevenson was crashing hard into the media row signage late in the first half. He went to the locker room, got five stitches, and came back to keep hitting shots.

“We had a designed play for me to get a 3 after that,” Stevenson said, “and I knew it was going in.”

Another Stevenson 3-pointer pushed Wichita State’s lead over 20, 54-33, for the first time with 15:51 to play. The crowd roared, and he coasted back down the court holding three fingers.

“Erik was amazing,” Burton said. “Really, he was doing it all tonight.”

Ole Miss never really threatened after that. The Rebels shot better than 50 percent in each of their previous four games, all wins, but managed just 30.8 percent from the floor on Saturday. Ole Miss led the SEC in assists, averaging 16.8 entering Saturday’s game, but had only five Saturday to go with 15 turnovers.

Marshall pointed to outscoring the Rebels 20-1 in points off turnovers, and so did Davis.

“We thought points off turnovers would be huge, and it was,” Davis said.
