USF, Tulane Earn Wins Saturday

USF and Tulane picked up wins in American Athletic Conference men's basketball action on Saturday (Dec. 12). USF's win over Wofford was the 300th of head coach Brian Gregory's career, while the Green Wave defeated Arkansas-Pine Bluff to improve to 4-0 on the season.

USF 58, Wofford 56 - Box Score

ATLANTA (AP) — Jamir Chaplin tipped in a miss with 18 seconds remaining to lead USF to a 58-56 win over Wofford on Saturday as part of Holiday Hoopsgiving.

Tray Hollowell missed a 3-pointer at the other end.

David Collins tallied 13 points and 11 rebounds and Alexis Yetna had 11 points for South Florida (4-2). Chaplin added eight rebounds.

Hollowell scored a career-high 21 points for the Terriers (2-2). Storm Murphy added 17 points, eight rebounds and six assists.

Tulane 67, Arkansas-Pine Bluff 56 - Box Score

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Jaylen Forbes had 16 points and nine rebounds as Tulane beat Arkansas-Pine Bluff 67-56 on Saturday.

Jordan Walker had 15 points for Tulane (4-0). Nobal Days added eight rebounds.

Nicholas Jones had 15 points for the Golden Lions (1-6). Joshuwan Johnson added 12 points. Markedric Bell had 12 points and nine rebounds.

No. 12/16 Tennessee 65, Cincinnati 56 - Box Score

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- When the offense struggled, No. 12 Tennessee turned to its defense and found success.

The Vols, who shot just 32 percent from the field, held Cincinnati to three points in the final six minutes to pull out a 65-56 victory Saturday.

John Fulkerson had 15 points and 12 rebounds, helping Tennessee pull away late. A 3-pointer by David DeJulius put Cincinnati ahead 53-51 with 6:14 left. The 6-foot-9 Fulkerson came back with four foul shots, giving the Vols (2-0) the lead for good.

Jaden Springer added 11 for Tennessee (2-0), making five foul shots. The Vols went 25 for 30 from the line while Cincinnati went 4 for 7.

Jeremiah Davenport came off the bench to lead the Bearcats (2-2) with 14 points. DeJulius scored 11 and Tari Eason had 10.

Keith Williams, who came into the game as Cincinnati's leading scorer at over 17 points per game, was limited to six.

While the Vols struggled from the field, they managed to hold a 44-34 rebounding advantage. They were beaten on the boards by Colorado in their opener, 38-32.

Cincinnati big men Chris Vogt and Rapolas Ivanauskas each had three fouls by halftime. Vogt ultimately fouled out.

Oklahoma State 67, Wichita State 64 - Box Score

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Freshman star Cade Cunningham hit a contested 3-pointer with 9.8 seconds left and Oklahoma State edged Wichita State 67-64 on Saturday.

After Morris Udeze tied it on two free throws with 34 seconds left, Cunningham, a 6-foot-8 preseason All-Ameircan, dribbled the clock down at the top of the key. He worked toward the left wing, took a jab step to get his defender off-balance and hit the winner over the lunging 6-foot-5 Dexter Dennis.

Dennis missed a contest 3-pointer from beyond the top of the key as time ran out.

Isaac Likekele led the Cowboys (6-0), who have won 10 straight, with 14 points and eight rebounds. Rondel Walker added 13 points and Cunningham 10. Cunningham only put up two shots in the second half, the first a miss with 1:26 to play.

Tyson Etienne scored 19 points for the Shockers (1-2) and Alterique Gilbert added 14.

Cunningham had all seven of his first-half points in the final four minutes to give the Cowboys a 40-34 lead at the break. They had a lead of eight points five minutes into the second half but Wichita State rallied to go up 60-59 with three minutes left.

Oklahoma State shot just 42% and Wichita State 46%, the teams combining to go 12 of 52 from 3-point range and committing 35 turnovers. The Cowboys had a 44-33 rebounding advantage but only went 10 of 16 from the foul line.

Auburn 74, Memphis 71 - Box Score

ATLANTA (AP) — Justin Powell scored 26 points, Allen Flanigan scored 16 and Auburn beat Memphis 74-71 in a Holiday Hoopsgiving matchup on Saturday.

Flanigan’s jumper with 3:45 left to play gave Auburn a 64-63 lead and they led the rest of the way. Powell made 1 of 2 foul shots with 1:58 left for a 70-65 advantage, the largest lead either team held in the second half.

Flanigan made 1 of 2 from the line with 1.8 seconds to go to give Auburn a 74-71 lead. Alex Lomax grabbed the defensive rebound and managed to take a couple of dribbles, but his three-quarter court baseball toss went wide right of the basket.

Neither team played its best basketball.

Memphis had 18 turnovers while Auburn (3-2) committed 17 . Memphis was 27-for-71 (38%) shooting — including 6 for 21 from 3-point range. Auburn was 27 for 60 (45%) and missed 18 of 24 from 3-point range.

Additionally, Memphis (4-3) finished 11-for-23 (47.8%) shooting from the foul line while Auburn made only 14 for 26 (53.8%).

D.J. Jeffries led Memphis with 16 points and Boogie Ellis and Lomax each scored 10. Moussa Cisse grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds — including 10 offensive — for Memphis.

Saturday’s game was just the second meeting in the series history between the two. Auburn won the first contest, 78-64, in 1953 at Memphis.
