Full Slate Of Meets Kicked Off February In The American

-Wichita State took part in a pair of meets over the weekend, hosting the WSU Invitational and traveling to the Washington Invitational. Maria Romero claimed the pentathlon at the WSU Invitational, scoring 3,440 points with wins in the 60-meter hurdles and 800-meter run keying her podium performance. Alex Adams claimed the weight throw with a top attempt of 18.07m (59-3.50), Amanda Kakoulias won the shot put thanks to a throw of 14.35m (47-1.00), Kendra Henry bested the field in the high jump by clearing 1.66m (5-5.25) and Alyssa Wheeler secured the title in the pole vault at 3.61m (11-10). On the men’s side, Britte Magnuson raced to victory in the mile with a time of 4:21.56, while Weston Lewis cleared 2.08m (6-9.75) to win the high jump. Bryce Bearden added a victory in the pole vault with an attempt of 4.91m (16-1.25), while Cory Landon turned in a runner-up result in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:58.01. At the Washington Invitational, reigning American Women’s Cross Country champion Winny Koskei placed sixth (second collegiate runner) in the 5000-meter run with a time of 16:21.00. Rebekah Topham posted the second-fastest 3000-meter time in school history, clocking in with a time of 9:16.79 to rank sixth in the country in the distance this season.
 
-UConn secured the men’s team victory in the New England Indoor Championship on Saturday in Boston. Wellington Ventura won the 500-meter dash with a time of 1:03.01, Jordan Torney raced to a triumph in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.04, Daniel Claxton cleared 2.14m (7-0.25) in the high jump and David Ajama claimed the triple jump at 15.42m (50-7.25) for the Huskies. Eric Van Der Els was the runner-up in the mile (4:07.22), while Stephen Sutton added a second-place showing in the 800-meter run (1:54.75). Josiah Thompson clocked a PR in the 60-meter dash in 6.82 to finish second in the field. UConn claimed the team sweep on the women’s side by taking the New England crown. Mia Nahom, Celia Chacko, Solange Wright and Danielle Jordan guided the DMR to victory in 11:52.46, and Nahom turned in a first-place time in the mile (4:52.63). Shanelle Colmon turned in an individual win in the 200-meter dash in 24.75, and the 4x800-meter relay of Chacko, Allie Alsup, Emma Krebs and Elise O’Leary paced the field with a time of 9:05.25.
 
-Houston hosted and took part in the Houston G5 & Super 22 Invitational. Miles Marhofer extended his program record in the weight throw for the third time this season, fashioning a winning attempt of 21.18m (69-6.00). Taylor Scaife added a gold medal and Cougar sweep in the women’s weight throw, taking the top spot with a throw of 21.28m (69-9.75). Nicholas Alexander was the men’s 60-meter dash runner-up, clocking in at 6.74 for the third-fastest heat in the conference this season. Travis Collins ran a final time of 6.68 in the elite section of the 60 dash. Naomi Taylor placed third in the 60-meter hurdles (8.19) for Houston, as Dayo Akindele added a third-place showing of his own (7.808) in the men’s 60-hurdles final.
 
-Cincinnati traveled to Bloomington, Indiana, to compete in the Indiana Relays on Friday and Saturday. Caisja Chandler established a school record in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.52 to take first place. Lauren Kemper logged a 5000-meter PR of 17:41.95 to secure runner-up honors, and Irati Mitxelena added a second-place showing in the triple jump with a top effort of 12.59m (41-3.75) for the Bearcat women. In men’s action, Aaron Bienenfeld placed third in the 3000-meter run with a PR and conference-leading time of 8:01.89. Cannon Riddle claimed the win in the heptathlon with 4,955 points keyed by a win in the 60-meter hurdles, and Toni Banos turned in a first-place showing in the seeded mile with a time of 4:13.35.
 
-USF took part in a pair of meets in New England over the weekend, stopping first at the Harvard Crimson Invite in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and closing the weekend at the Scarlet and White Invite in Boston. Adriana Janic set a USF record in the pentathlon at the Crimson Invite with 3,906 points, the top score in The American this season and among the top 20 in the NCAA. Taquon Terry added a win in the men’s long jump by clearing 7.26m (23-10), and Evan Babatz turned in a victory in the mile with a time of 4:26.32. At the Scarlet and White Invite, the men’s 4x400-meter relay squad of Maurice Nock, Yohance Haynes, Monte Parker and Derwin Moultrie took the top spot with a time of 3:14.76. Shaneylix Davila claimed a runner-up placement in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.58.
 
-Memphis competed in the South Alabama Jaguar Invitation on Sunday in Birmingham, Alabama, the site of the upcoming American Indoor Track and Field Championships. Jordan Wesner won the men’s high jump with a conference-high 2.20m (7-2.5) showing, while Kolbeinn Gunnarsson (400-meter dash, 48.93), Zachary Wyatt (mile, 4:12.79), Payton Gleason (5000-meter run, 14:46.72) and Adar Sheere (weight throw, 19.39m/63-7.5) added individual wins for the Tiger men. Paris Perkins raced to victory in the women’s 400-meter dash with a top time of 55.83, while DeeNia McMiller dominated the weight throw with a winning 21.02m (68-11.75).  
 
-Tulsa sent competitors to both the Black & Gold Invitational in Iowa City, Iowa, and the Indiana University Relays in Bloomington, Indiana. Maite Propp established a meet record in the 3000-meter run at Iowa, clocking in at 8:35.52 for the win. Christian Baker raced to victory in the mile with a time of 4:09.91 for the Golden Hurricane. Peter Lynch was the top finisher for Tulsa at IU, placing ninth in his heat of the 3000-meter run in 8:08.12. On the women’s side, Carsyn Spurgeon (long jump, 5.98m/19-7.5), Caitlin Klopfer (3000-meter run, 9:51.15), Keely Jones (mile, 4:58.04) and Allison Bailey (800-meter run, 2:12.45) each turned in runner-up showings for the Golden Hurricane.
 
-East Carolina sent both its men’s and women’s squads to the Carolina Challenge in Columbia, South Carolina. Sommer Knight improved her program indoor pole vault record with a top attempt clearing 4.15m (13-7.25) in a third-place showing, while Tavia Ranger turned in a shot put section win with a throw of 13.23m (43-5.00). In men’s weight throw action, Ryan Davis established a facility record 22.20m (72-10) to set a program mark in an event win for ECU.
 
-SMU joined Houston in the field at the Houston G5 & Super 22 Invitational. Chelsea Francis blazed a trail to first place in the 60-meter dash with the top team in the conference this season, clocking in at 7.17 (third-fastest in the NCAA in 2020). Chika Iwuamadi won her heat of the 400-meter dash with a time of 53.62, and the squad of Francis, Iwuamadi, Whitney Williams and Annette Bolomboy claimed victory in the 4x400-meter relay in 3:42.95.
 
-Tulane was the third team from The American present at the Houston G5 & Super 22 Invitational. Trina Malej earned an event win in the triple jump, scoring a winning jump of 12.61m (41-4.50). Mary Catherine Stovall turned in a third-place showing in the 5000-meter run (18:45.19), and Olivia Hicks (high jump, 1.65m/5-5.00), Bridgid Selfors (3000-meter, 10:00.53), and Kristina Leggas (pole vault, 3.85m/12-7.50) turned in PR performances for the Green Wave.

-Temple traveled to the Villanova Invitational in Staten Island, New York. Marissa White enjoyed a runner-up start in the 200-meter dash, logging a time of 24.87. Candus Burks placed third in the long jump at 5.33m, Sydney Williams placed fourth in the finals of the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.94 and Lexi Walsh added a fourth-place showing of her own in the 3000-meter run after cross the finish line in 10:47.04.
