CINCINNATI – The 2020 American Athletic Conference Women’s Volleyball Championship is set to take place on April 2-3 at Fifth Third Arena in Cincinnati. UCF and Temple will represent the American’s East Division while Houston and Tulane are set to compete from the American’s West Division in the single-elimination tournament.
The first tournament semifinal between East No. 1 UCF and West No. 2 Tulane is scheduled for April 2 at 2 p.m. (ET)/1 p.m. (CT). That match will be followed by West No. 1 Houston against East No. 2 Temple on April 2 at approximately 5 p.m. (ET). The championship match is set for 3 p.m. (ET) on April 3. Lincoln Rose and Adam Johnson will have the call throughout the tournament on ESPN+.
UCF LOOKS TO DEFEND THE AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIP
UCF completed an unblemished 8-0 record in the East Division to secure the division’s top seed entering the American Volleyball Championship in search of a second straight title. The Knights defended home court in the inaugural American volleyball tournament in 2019, emerging as the tournament’s No. 3 seed with a four-set win over No. 6 Tulsa, a sweep of No. 2 SMU and a five-set comeback win against No. 1 Cincinnati at The Venue in Orlando, Florida. UCF has previously made nine appearances in the NCAA Championship.
HOUSTON HITS THE POSTSEASON AS BEST IN THE WEST
After breaking out with a 10-6 conference record and No. 4 seed in 2019 American Volleyball Championship, Houston took the next step this season with a 9-1 mark in the West Division to lock down the top seed from the division. Following a hard-luck loss in last season’s tournament first round to West rival Tulane, the Cougars are in search of their first match win at the American Championship. Houston has captured two conference tournament titles in its history, the 1997 Conference USA Championship and the 1994 Southwest Conference Championship.
TULANE READY TO ROLL THROUGH THE FIELD
For the second straight season, Tulane is a semifinalist in the American Volleyball Championship after putting together a 7-3 mark in the West Division in the regular season. The Green Wave came back from a 2-1 deficit as the No. 5 seed in last season’s first round to defeat No. 4 Houston in five sets. Tulane previously captured the 2008 Conference USA title.
TEMPLE MAKES AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIP DEBUT
Temple is the lone newcomer to the American Volleyball Championship in this season’s field after capturing the second seed in the East Division. The Owls completed a turnaround from a 3-13 mark in the East in 2019 with a 4-4 showing to reach the league tournament. Temple previously claimed tournament titles in the Atlantic 10 in 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2002.
