IRVING, Texas – Houston sophomore women’s golf standout Karen Fredgaard added to her historic 2020-21 campaign by being named on Wednesday to the Women’s Golf Coaches Association All-America First Team. She became the inaugural first-team All-America selection in program history with the honor.
 
Fredgaard most recently closed the four-day NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championship on May 21-24 in a tie for 28th place with rounds of 77-70-71-74=292 (+4) at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona. It was the best finish on the leaderboard and in relation to par at the NCAA Championship by any solely unattached women’s player in American Athletic Conference history.
 
Fredgaard was the third different women’s player from The American to enter the NCAA Championship as an unattached individual, joining Memphis’ Michaela Fletcher in 2015 (tie for 66th place) and 2019 (tie for 86th place) and Houston’s Leonie Harm in 2016 (tie for 81st place) and 2018 (tie for 42nd place). Fredgaard was one of three individuals to advance from the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional after the tournament was canceled due to inclement weather on May 12.
 
Fredgaard was a unanimous selection as the American Women’s Golf Player of the Year and as an all-conference first-team player during a 2020-21 season that was highlighted by four top-five finishes, a win at the UCF Challenge (Jan. 31-Feb. 2 in Orlando, Florida) and a solo third-place showing at the American Women’s Golf Championship at Pinehurst No. 6 in April. She also placed third overall in the second edition of the Augusta Women’s Amateur that was contested at the Augusta National Golf Club in April.
