05.29.21

JACKSONVILLE, Fla./COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Solid performances from across the American Athletic Conference throughout the week culminated in Saturday’s final day of action at 2021 NCAA Track & Field Championship regional sites. Teams from The American earned a total of 53 qualifying marks for NCAA Nationals, including 39 such performances on Saturday alone, at the NCAA East Regional at Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville and the NCAA West Regional at E.B. Cushing Stadium in College Station.

The final day of the men’s competition at the West Regional was postponed until Saturday due to inclement weather in the state of Texas on Friday. Both men’s and women’s events were held concurrently to close the meet.

Houston led the way with 19 combined NCAA Championship qualifying standards during the meet spread across both men’s and women’s individual events and relays. Two-time American league champion Shaun Maswanganyi was the victor in the men’s 200-meter dash (20.19), finished second in the 100-meter dash (10.04) and placed second with the Houston men’s 4x100-meter relay team that took second place (39.02) at the West Regional. Travis Collins posted national qualifying times in the men’s 100-meter dash (10.27, 11th) and 200-meter dash (20.58, ninth) and competed as part of the 4x100-meter relay. Brianne Bethel powered the Cougar women’s squad by qualifying for the 100-meter (11.27, fourth) and 200-meter (22.78, third) dash and with the fourth-place 4x100-meter relay team that clocked a time of 43.21 and the ninth-place team in the 4x400-meter effort in 3:33.62.

The other multi-time individual qualifier from The American was Cincinnati’s Caisja Chandler, who took 10th place in the 100-meter dash (11.26) and sixth place in the 200-meter dash (22.79). In additional to Houston’s three qualifying relay teams, South Florida will send both the women’s 4x100-meter (43.95, ninth) and 4x400-meter (3:34.07, 11th) relays and SMU its women’s 4x400-meter (3:34.05, 10th) to Eugene.
