Charlotte 3, SMU 1 – Box Score
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A stifling defensive effort and efficient performance in the attacking third led the No. 19 Charlotte men's soccer team past No. 14 SMU, 3-1, on Saturday night at Transamerica Field.
The first-ever meeting between the Niners (8-1-2, 2-1-2 AAC) and Mustangs (8-3-1, 4-2-0 AAC) marked Charlotte's 500th victory in program history, upping CLT's all-time record to 500-309-105.
Super-senior Luke Johnson scored his first of the season and fourth of his career to open the scoring, while junior Matthew Kirk and sophomore Brigham Larsen added to the 49ers scorebook.
A fourth Niner tallied a pair of points on the night, in senior captain Sean Suber who assisted on each of Charlotte's first two goals to Johnson and Kirk.
The first half of the opening frame was largely a cagey affair, with the sides combing for just three shots across 23 minutes of action.
Just past the halfway point, the Niners struck on a corner kick on the near side. Sophomore Callum Watts played a short ball to freshman Samy Kolby who played a near perfect ball into the six-yard box. Suber headed down Kolby's pass, right into the path of Johnson who smashed home the night's opening goal.
Following its goal, CLT began to dominate possession and put its foot fully on the gas. Just over 10 minutes after Johnson's goal, the Niners found a break out of nothing.
Suber played senior Kameron Lacey in on a long ball just past the mid-line, in one deft movement, Lacey played in Kirk who calmly chipped the keeper from roughly 20-yards out to double the 49ers lead.
The Green & White saw out the remainder of the period to take a, 2-0, lead into the halftime break.
Out of the locker room, the sides returned to the cagey and physical play that defined the start of the evening's contest.
After weathering the Mustang's storm through the middle portions of the half, Charlotte eventually found a third in the 72nd minute on a picture move started by Lacey, who found Watts on the edge of the area.
Watts then played in junior Jonathan Nyandjo who ripped a low cross across the six-yard area, for Larsen to tap home to triple the CLT lead.
SMU pushed forward furiously over the night's final 18 minutes, eventually finding a consolation goal with less than five minutes to play, that would cement the nights eventual final score line.
