STARKVILLE, Miss. – The University of Houston volleyball team won its eighth match in a row on Saturday, defeating Kennesaw State in straight sets (25-20, 25-19, 25-12).
The eight-match winning streak for the Cougars (8-1) ties head coach David Rehr's longest winning streak while at Houston.
Senior Mogran Janda set a career high with five aces in the match, the second-most aces in a three-set match in Cougar volleyball history.
The Katy, Texas, native helped spread the ball around all match, running the offense to a .373 attacking percentage, Houston's highest offensive efficiency of the year and the highest attacking average since the opening match of 2021 against Lipscomb (.381).
Janda had a fond comfort-level setting graduate Isabel Theut on Saturday, dishing 20 sets to the right-side attacker. Theut finished the match with 12 kills on 20 swings, without an error. Theut is the only attacker to hit a .600 attacking clip on 20 attempts since 2011 and she has done it twice (minimum 20 attacks).
Memphis 3, Illinois State 0 – Box Score
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Tigers improved to 6-1 at home this season and 7-3 overall when they collected a sweep over the Redbird of Illinois State (25-19, 25-21, 25-14).
After falling to a 9-5 deficit early in the first set, the Tigers roared back with a 10-0 run against the redbirds. Senior Gigi Crescenzo led the way for Memphis with three kills, three digs and three service aces in the first set 25-19 win.
The Red Birds and Tigers kept the second set close. With the teams tied at 14 and momentum in Illinois States favor, Memphis was forced to call a timeout. The Tigers would regroup and go on a 6-0 scoring run forcing Illinois State's hand. Memphis would go up 2-0 in the match winning the second frame 25-21.
Memphis was able to pull away in the third set, finishing the match outscoring the Red Birds 16-7. Tate would seal the deal with a match-ending service ace that gave Memphis their second sweep of the season.
The Tigers put down 38 kills today while holding Illinois State to a .009 hitting percentage.
Tulsa 3, Abilene Christian 1 – Box Score
Tulsa, Okla. — The University of Tulsa volleyball team had four athletes record double-doubles to help power the Golden Hurricane's 3-1 victory (22-25, 25-23, 25-16, 25-19) over the Abilene Christian Wildcats Saturday at the Kenneth H. Cooper Aerobics Center in Tulsa.
Tulsa ends the weekend as outright winners of the ORU Golden Eagle Classic after sweeping UTEP and defeating Oral Roberts and Abilene Christian in four sets. Tulsa's overall record increases to 5-4 after Saturday's win.
The Hurricane was led by setter Avery Kalsu, who had 28 assists and 23 digs. She also pitched in five kills.
Outside hitter Lauren Eitler followed up with 16 kills and 10 digs.
Libero Marta Pecalli had a big game against the Wildcats, putting up 11 assists and 24 digs while setter Brayden Hipp recorded 12 assists and 10 digs.
Outside hitters Kayley Cassaday and Bailey Rowe boosted the Hurricane attack, combining for 27 kills in the match.
Middle blocker Rachel Brown secured three blocks to help fortify the Tulsa defense.
The Golden Hurricane will return to action this Thursday, September 15, and Friday, September 16, at the Baylor Invitational in Waco, Texas.
UCF 3, Miami 2 – Box Score
ORLANDO, Fla.- The UCF Volleyball team defeated Miami by a score of 3-2 (21-25, 25-17, 13-15, 25-22, 15-12), in the Venue on Saturday evening.
The Knights showcased their toughness but were unable to overcome the Hurricanes in their first set, losing 25-21. UCF and Miami were tied four times, but the Knights were never able to take the lead from the Hurricanes.
Zumach surpassed her season-high in kills, accumulating 19 in five sets with a staggering .516 kill percentage. Abby Hansen contributed with 13 kills and nine blocks. McKenna Melville continues to close in on the school record with 19 kills including the match-winning kill. Melville also dominated defensively with a team-high 14 digs.
Knight Nation continues to show its support for UCF Volleyball with an electric crowd that helped the Knights beat the Hurricanes today. 1,429 is the second highest regular season attendance in program history.
East Carolina 3, Old Dominion 0 – Box Score
NORFOLK, Va. – East Carolina secured its second sweep of the season Saturday afternoon, defeating host Old Dominion 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-17) in the Quest for the Crown tournament finale at the ODU Volleyball Center.
The Pirates improve to 4-5 with one weekend of non-conference play remaining while the Monarchs dip to 3-6.
Angeles Alderete polished off a phenomenal weekend, tallying 15 kills, eight digs, three blocks and a .289 hitting percentage. During the three matches in Norfolk, she averaged 5.38 points and 4.92 kills per set and fired at a .312 clip. Shaylynn Hall provided a spark at the net with eight blocks while Kenzie Beckham anchored the back row with 10 digs. Myah Conway paced the home team with 10 kills and a .318 hitting percentage.
Northern Illinois 3, Wichita State 0 – Box Score
Wichita State 3, Kansas City 0 – Box Score
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Wichita State split a pair of matches at the KC Roos Classic on Saturday, falling in straight sets to Northern Illinois before sweeping Kansas City at the Swinney Center.
In match one, Morgan Weber and Sophia Rohling each recorded nine kills to lead the Shockers offensively, while Kelly reached double-figures with ten digs.
In match two, Kelly fired a match-high 15 kills to go along with 12 digs, while Natalie Foster hit .556 with 11 terminations. In addition to Kelly, Liekweg (13 digs), Weber (12) and Litzau (11) all contributed to the defensive effort. Kelly and Weber were both named to the All-Classic team.
Temple 3, Cornell 2 – Box Score
Colgate 3, Temple 1 – Box Score
ITHACA, NY – The Temple Owls volleyball team improved to 4-4 on the season with a five-set win over Cornell on Saturday and a four-set loss to Colgate.
Against Cornell, Taylor Davenport led the Owls with 16 kills, while Peyton Boyd (15) and Jelena Prolic (14) both had double-digit kills. Temple was paced by Patrycja Zielinska with 52 assists.
Defensively, Falanika Danielson ended with 23 digs, while Samantha Jo Mikosky had four blocks.
Against Colgate, Davenport finished with 20 kills while the team was paced by Zielinska with 46 assists. Nikki Shimao and Zielinska both ended with 11 digs.
McNeese State 3, South Florida 1 – Box Score
SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The University of South Florida Bulls (4-5) battled against McNeese State University (2-8) in four sets on Saturday, but came up just short in the last match of the UTSA Invitational weekend.
The Rowdy's claimed the match by set scores of 22-25, 25-21, 25-14, 25-18.
Freshman Maria Clara Andrade (São Paulo, Brazil) posted her fourth double-double of the season with 17 kills and 14 digs. She has floored double-digit kills six times on the young season. Marta Cvitkovic (Rijeka, Croatia) and Tizi Puljiz (Resistencia, Argentina) were the next two leaders on offense with 12 and nine kills, respectively.
CC Clausen (The Woodlands, Texas) claimed 20 digs on Saturday, totaling 39 digs throughout the weekend. Clausen broke the career digs record during Friday evening's night.
Amiree Hendricks-Walker (Los Angeles, Ca.) paced the team with five total blocks, followed by Puljiz and Cvitkovic with two blocks a piece.
Kelsey O'Loughlin (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) totaled 27 assists and seven digs in the match.
South Carolina 3, Cincinnati 0 – Box Score
COLUMBIA, S.C. – The University of Cincinnati volleyball team was swept by South Carolina on Saturday at the Carolina Volleyball Center in Columbia, S.C.
Freshman outside hitter Carly Glendinning was the only Bearcat to tally more than five kills in the match, finishing with nine at a .273 hitting percentage.
South Carolina hit .486 in the match with 41 kills and only five attacking errors on 74 attempts. The Bearcats struggled offensively, hitting just .168 (32-16-95). The Gamecocks also outblocked the Bearcats, nine to three.
Oklahoma 3, Tulane 0 – Box Score
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The Tulane University volleyball team (4-4) dropped a three-set match to Oklahoma (12-25, 12-25, 19-25) on day two of the Santa Clara Invitational.
The Green Wave offense hit .042 in the match while the Sooners countered with a .367 clip. Graduate student Kayla Kaiser led the Wave with 7 kills, hitting .211 overall. The middle blocker also landed a block totaling 8.5 points.
Outside hitter Mackenzie Martin was right behind her with 6 and a .125 hitting percentage. Martin also claimed seven digs in the match.
Libero Jillian Dits controlled the defensive duties with a combined eight digs, three receptions and an assist. Senior setter Kate Van Houten moved the ball well, tallying 16 assists and seven digs.
The Green Wave dropped the match 0-3. In three sets they claimed 23 kills, 22 assists, three aces, 36 digs, two blocks and a 27.3% passing rate.
UConn 3, SMU 2 – Box Score
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – SMU fell in five sets to UCONN in the finale of the USD Invitational for both sides at the Jenny Craig Pavilion Saturday.
Despite career-best day by four members of the squad, the Mustangs (23-25, 28-26, 19-25, 25-15, 12-15) fell to 5-4 on the season, while the Huskies improved to 3-5.
Natalie Perdue tallied 25 kills and 12 digs, the most in her career in both categories and notching her third double-double of the season. Jamison Wheeler's seventh double-double featured 25 successful attacks, the most of her career, with 10 digs.
Celia Cullen handed out 61 assists, five more than her previous high and dug out 13 attacks for her first double-double of the campaign. Jadyn Bauss registered highs with 32 digs and four assists.
