RICHMOND, Va. – #RV FIU Men's Soccer visited Virginia Commonwealth, Tuesday night, defeating the Rams, 1-0.
FIU would come out pressing hard, eventually gaining the lion's share of possession in the first half. Bernardo Dos Santos Monteiro was controlling the attack with deft dribbling and strong passing, getting the ball into dangerous positions for the Panthers.
FIU's best opportunities came in the 17th minute when they would fire four shots in the space of one minute, all of them getting blocked before testing the keeper.
The Panthers would finish the first half with eight total shots and head into halftime tied at 0-0.
FIU came out hot, opening the scoring in the 46th minute. A scramble in the VCU box would see Paulo Alves slip a pass across the face of goal that was finished off by Simon Afrifa, putting the Panthers up 1-0.
The offense kept the pressure going all night but multiple blocks kept most of FIU's 23 shots from reaching goal.
Goalkeeper Matt Levy was sharp in his Panthers debut, making two key saves as FIU would come out on top 1-0.

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Looking to keep their four-game winning streak going, the Memphis Tigers played in their first road game in nearly a month when they traveled to SIUE. Despite a late goal, Memphis would not be able to put the Cougars away and took a 1-1 draw.
After today's game, Memphis moves to 5-1-2 for the season.
SIUE took an early lead when they scored in the 12' of the match. Memphis challenged the Cougars goalkeeper from the start getting shots on goal from Brandon Brackett, Alberto Cruz, Hayden Anderson, Peter Chang and Cesar Sancho in the opening frame.
In the 80', Lineker Rodrigues dos Santos would get fouled in the penalty box and connect for the goal to tie the match at 1-1.
Colin Welsh would keep it a tie when he made a game-saving stop in the 89'.
