Charlotte Stays Undefeated With Another High-Scoring Affair

SAINT LOUIS, Mo. – Three different Mustangs found the back of the net to capture SMU men's soccer third consecutive victory by a 3-0 count over Saint Louis Friday night at Robert R. Hermann Stadium.
 
With the win, SMU improves to 4-1 on the year, tallying 12 total goals while only giving up two in the teams three game win streak. In Friday's match, SMU outshot Saint Louis 18 to 12, including six shots on goal.
 
Knut Ahlander's goal got the SMU scoring started in the second minute. The goal marked back-to-back matches Ahlander's scored within the first two minutes of play. The graduate midfielder has scored at least one goal in the last four matches and has six on the season.
 
In the 52nd minute, freshman Alexander Petraeus doubled the Mustang lead when he cashed in the lower left side of the net off a Fredrik Skilberg assist. The score marked Petraeus's first collegiate goal.
 
Kyran Chambron Pinho added insurance for the Mustangs, firing an impressive shot on a free kick from far out in the 71st minute for his first goal of the season.
 
The SMU defense was solid throughout the night. SMU keeper Cole Johnson had two saves en route to the teams third clean sheet of the season.
 
Charlotte 5, Detroit Mercy 0 – Box Score
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A third consecutive clean sheet and a second straight five-goal scoring output, led the Charlotte men's soccer team to a dominant, 5-0, victory over Detroit Mercy on Friday at Transamerica Field.
 
The win marked Charlotte Head Coach, Kevin Langan's 118th at the helm, making him the winningest head coach in program history ahead of former gaffer, John Tart.
 
In Friday's victory CLT saw five goals from five different goal scorers, with nine players in total penning their names on the score sheet in the dominant victory.
 
Sophomore's Lasse Laursen and Luke Husakiwsky found the back of the net for the first time in their Charlotte careers, with both scoring off corner kicks delivered by classmate, Callum Watts.
 
Senior Kameron Lacey and junior Matthew Kirk each netted a goal for the second straight match, while senior captain Sean Suber netted a PK late in the second half for his second goal of the year.
 
The Niners threw the night’s opening punch less than five minutes in as Watts found the forehead of Laursen to quicly put CLT up, 1-0.
 
25 minutes later, a Charlotte attack was stifled by a foul inside the penalty area. Suber cooly finished the PK to double the Niner advantage just over a quarter of an hour before halftime.
 
Out of the break, Charlotte continued to dominate possession in the attacking third and less than 15 minutes into the second, Husakiwsky found CLT's reward off yet another corner from Watts.
 
Lacey and Kirk each found the net on brilliant moves in the final 20 minutes to complete the scoring and cement the evening's, 5-0 score line.
 
South Florida 2, Mercer 0 – Box Score
TAMPA, Fla. – The University of South Florida men's soccer team picked up its first win of 2022 on Friday night with an impressive 2-0 victory over visiting Mercer at Corbett Stadium.
 
The Bulls (1-3-1) dominated the Bears (2-1-2) while handing them their first loss of the season, outscoring Mercer, 16-7, including a commanding 9-3 margin in shots on goal. After just eight total shots in the first half –8-3 in favor of South Florida – the Green and Gold turned it up offensively during the second 45 minutes outshooting its visitors, 11-4.
 
Ajmeer Spengler got the scoring going with the Bulls' first goal of the season with what was intended to be a cross into the box to Oscar Resano. The ball, however, found its way to the far post and into the back of the goal. It was Spengler's first goal in a Bulls uniform after transferring from Stetson after the 2021 season.
 
In the second half, South Florida had several chances to put the ball past Mercer goalkeeper Trevor McMullin but it wasn't until the 82' when Alex Sannes finally beat the Bears' netminder off assists from Shion Soga and Josh Gomina to extend the lead to its final score of 2-0.
 
Jackson Weyman made three saves on the night and recorded his second shutout of the season and the fourth of his career, including his time at Marquette.
 
Spengler had match-highs of four shots and three shots on goal, while five other players added two shots apiece for the Bulls.
 
UCF 3, UC Irvine 2 – Box Score
Irvine, Calif – The UCF men’s soccer team used a late goal to take down UC Irvine on Friday night, 3-2. The win moves the Knights to 3-1 on the season.
 
UCF jumped out front out of the gates with a goal from Lucca Dourado in the 13th minute.
 
Irvine would fire back in the 31st minute to even the match with a goal from Diego Otoya, but a second goal from Dourado would put the Knight back on top 2-1 in the 37th minute.
 
Coming out of the half, Samuel Atiye would tie the match with a 53rd minute goal.
 
In the 76th minute, Mael Haise would use a header to push the ball past the goalkeeper for the game-winner.
 
Lafayette 3, Temple 1 – Box Score
 
PHILADELPHIA, Pa.- The Temple men's soccer team (1-2-2, 0-0-0 AAC) fell to the Lafayette Leopards 3-1 on Friday night. Temple scored first, but Lafayette scored three goals to take the victory.
 
The first ten minutes were even, with both sides firing off two shots. Freshman goalkeeper Micah Ramirez made his first save of the match in the 29th minute.
 
In the 34th minute, Fabian Grant scored the first goal of his Temple career. Tessho Kobayashi passed to Sean Karani off an inbounds pass. Karani quickly got himself free and found Grant open just above the box where he fired a bouncing shot past the keeper to put the Owls up 1-0.
 
The Leopards scored back-to-back goals in quick succession to end the half.
 
Lafayette scored in the 55th minute to go up 3-1.
 
Wisconsin 2, UAB 0 – Box Score
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB men’s soccer team fell to Wisconsin 2-0 on Friday night at PNC Field to fall to 2-2 on the season.
 
The Badgers would score the go-ahead goal in the 6th minute of the match from Michael Wampler.
 
Just before half, in the 39th minute, Mitchell Dryden would put the Badgers up 2-0.
 
UAB was outshot by Wisconsin 18-8 on the night and were able to get just one shot on goal.
