No. 10 Memphis Claims West Division Crown

10.20.23

No. 10 Memphis defeated UAB, 4-0, Thursday night (October 19) to earn the American Athletic Conference Women's Soccer West Division Championship. With the win, the Tigers also earned the No. 1 seed for the 2023 American Women's Soccer Championship, to be held at the Premier Sports Campus in Lakewood Ranch, Fla., October 31-November 5.

The scoring started early for Memphis, getting on the board in the fifth minute when Mya Jones found the feet of Anna Hauer deep in the box for a 1-0 lead. Just 40 seconds later, Momo Nakao would connect with Honoka Hamano who found the back of the net to put the Tigers up two.

Saorla Miller notched the team's third goal of the night on a high strike in the 59th minute that would go off the UAB goalkeeper's hands and into the net. The final Tiger goal came in the 73rd minute when Jones sent in a low shot into the box that ricocheted off the heel of Haylee Spray and into the top of the net for the 4-0 advantage.

UAB's lone shot of the match came in the 74th minute when Graycen Elliott sent a rocket towards the net that Claire Wyville stopped.

In other American action, East Carolina and South Florida both locked up spots in the Championship. The Pirates and Bulls are tied atop the East Division standings at 14 points apiece with two matches remaining.
