SMU, Tulsa, Memphis, UCF Reach American Women's Tennis Semifinals

ORLANDO, Fla. – SMU, Tulsa, Memphis and UCF won their respective quarterfinal matches in convincing fashion Thursday, as all four matches were decided by 4-0 scores.
 
The semifinal round of the championship will feature three of the top four seeds as No. 1 SMU, No. 2 UCF and No. 4 Tulsa all defended their seeds. They will be joined in the semifinals by No. 6-seeded Memphis, which was the only lower-seeded team to win Thursday as the Tigers look for back-to-back American titles.

SMU 4, Temple 0
Records: SMU (14-8), Temple (17-5)
 
Hadley Doyle, Drew Morris and Jackie Nylander were winners in both singles and doubles as top-seeded SMU handled Temple 4-0 in the quarterfinal round.
 
The win sends the Mustangs, who had earned a first-round bye as the tournament's No. 1 seed, to the semifinals of The American Championship for the third consecutive year as SMU pursues its first American title in women's tennis. 
 
Doyle and Morris paired for a 6-3 win at No. 3 doubles to put the Mustangs on the board, while Doyle clinched the match with a 7-5, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles. 
 
Morris had given the Mustangs a 2-0 lead with her straight-set victory at No. 3 singles, while Nylander added a straight-set win at No. 4 to set the table for Doyle's clincher. Morris and Nylander both won their matches by 6-1, 6-0 scores.
 
The Owls, who had advanced to the quarterfinals with a first-round win against Tulane Wednesday, saw a seven-match winning streak come to an end. Temple finishes the season at 17-5.
 
SMU will look for its second appearance in the American Athletic Conference final when the Mustangs face Tulsa Friday. SMU's only previous semifinal win came in the 2018 championship.
 
 
Tulsa 4, Wichita State 0
Records: Tulsa (14-10), Wichita State (12-10)
 
Laia Conde Monfort and Ana Naranjo Martinez clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win at the No. 2 position and went on to win their respective singles matches to carry Tulsa to the semifinal round of The American Championship with a 4-0 quarterfinal victory against Wichita State.
 
The Golden Hurricane improved to 17-4 all-time in the tournament and reached the semifinal round for the eighth time in as many tournaments since Tulsa joined The American. 
 
Monfort cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 victory to stake Tulsa to a 2-0 lead after she and Martinez opened the scoring with their doubles win. Martinez made it 3-0 with a 6-4, 6-1 decision at No. 5 singles before Myroslava Zelenchuk ended the match with a 7-5, 6-1 win at No. 4.
 
Tulsa moves on to face top-seeded SMU Friday at 3 p.m. ET in a semifinals rematch. The Golden Hurricane edged the Mustangs 4-3 in last year's semifinal round.
 
 
Memphis 4, South Florida 0

No. 6-seeded Memphis continued its impressive run through the American Athletic Conference Championship as the Tigers scored a 4-0 win against No. 3-seeded South Florida Thursday afternoon.
 
Memphis, which won its first American title last year as the No. 4 seed, moves on to the semifinals for the second straight season and the third time overall. 
 
Camila Soares and Aran Teixido-Garcia won in both singles and doubles to lead the Tigers. Soares took a 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles to give Memphis a 2-0 lead after she and Monique Woog had put the Tigers on the board with a 6-3 victory at No. 2 doubles.
 
Teixido-Garcia staked the Tigers to a 3-0 lead with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles before Micah Pierce ended it with a straight-set victory at No. 5 (7-5, 6-3).
 
Laura Pellicer Perello and Ireland Simme provided South Florida's highlight with a 6-1 win at No. 3 doubles before Memphis picked up wins at the other two positions to claim the first point.
 
Memphis will face No. 2-seeded UCF at 3 p.m. ET in Friday's semifinals.
 
 
UCF 4, Houston 0
Records: UCF (10-10), Houston (14-9)
 
No. 3-seeded UCF won three straight singles matches at the bottom of the ladder to clinch a 4-0 win against No. 7-seeded Houston Thursday.
 
The Knights took the first two doubles contests to get on the board and won all six first sets in singles to put themselves in position for a fourth semifinal appearance in the last five American Championships.
 
Jaleesa Leslie was first to finish in singles for the Knights as she gave UCF a 2-0 lead with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 5.
 
Nandini Sharma followed with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 4 before Anique Kattenberg got the clinching point with a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 6.
 
Sharma won in both singles and doubles as she joined Noel Saidenova for a 6-2 win from the No. 2 position.
 
The Knights will face Memphis Friday in the semifinals, with first serve scheduled for 3 p.m.
