Wichita State Men Lead; Tulsa, Shockers Women Tied Heading into Final Day of 2023 American Outdoor Track & Field Championships

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. The Wichita State Shockers men’s track team moved into first place, while the Shockers women are tied with Tulsa after two days of the 2023 American Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
 
The second day started with the women’s 10,000-meter run, which was delayed due to lightning the previous night. Tulsa Took two of the podium positions as Chloe Hershenow took home the gold medal with a time of 37:02.61 and Sara Scott claimed third place with a time of 37:24.35.  SMU’s Kaitlyn Gearin was the silver medalist with a time of 37:05.68.
 
In the men’s 10,000-meter run, Cincinnati’s Milo Greder used a final 100-meter push to overtake Wichita State’s Adrian Diaz-Lopez for the gold medal with a time of 31:32.91.  Diaz-Lopez finished as runner-up with a time of 31:33.24, while Tulsa’s Malte Propp took home the bronze medal at 31:36.30.
 
The heptathlon wrapped up on day two with Destiny Masters of Wichita State coming out on top with a total of 5,557 points.  SMU’s Olivia Dobson finished in second with 5,537 points. Both Masters and Dobson broke the USF Track Complex record.  Masters was the top performer in high jump and long jump, including setting a meet record jump of 6.03-meters in long jump. Tulane’s Margot Temines came in third place with 5,515 points.
 
Cincinnati’s Dominique Hall finished with a meet record 7,498 points in the decathlon, setting a decathlon record in the 400-meter dash with a 47.86.  Wichita State finished in second and third place with Nathan Vann recording 7,332 points and Adria Navajon finishing with 7.064 points.
 
Following the conclusion of the decathlon, a lightning storm delayed the track meet by nearly five hours before being resumed at 9 p.m. with the women’s 100-meter hurdles preliminaries. Rayniah Jones ran the fastest of the three UCF Knights to qualify for the finals, earning the top seed with a 13.02. Teammate Kaylor Harris finished in second with a 13.16, while Houston’s Destiny Smith will be the third seed with a 13.44.
 
Houston followed with three athletes qualifying in the 110-meter hurdles, led by DJ Akindele’s 13.76, while teammate De’Vion Wilson with the second fastest preliminary time at 13.99.  South Florida had two athletes qualify with Michael Bourne III (14.04) and Victor Steiner (14.40), while Wichita State had teammates Joseph Holthusen (14.16) and Jaleel Montomery (14.35). Memphis added Jacari Simpson (14.41) to the finals field.
 
Leoni Mierswa led the women’s 800-meter preliminaries with a time of 2:08.16.  Teammate Macey Hilton was also an automatic qualifier with a time of 2:09.55.  Tulane teammates Janae Dean (2:09.27) and Victoria Robinson (2:08.18) were automatic qualifiers, finishing top two in their heats, while Temple’s Laura Nicholson (2:11.28) and Elvira Bredin (2:11.68) were the final automatic qualifiers.
 
Houston finished with the top two times in the men’s 800-meter preliminary as Lloyd Frilot clocked a 1:50.16 and Adam Mason ran a 1:50.63.  Cincinnati teammates Tyler Wirth (1:50.68) and David Endres (1:51.07) were top two finishers in their heats to earn automatic qualifiers. Tulsa’s Sean Korsmo (1:50.68) and Memphis’s Vincent Chenier (1:51.81) were the final automatic qualifiers.
 
South Florida’s Nia Robinson blew past the meet record in long jump with a distance of 6.69 meters, beating the previous mark by .11 meters.  UCF teammates Asherah Collins and Jasmine Scott-Kilgo finished as silver and bronze medalists with jumps of 6.20 meters and 6.19 meters, respectively.
 
Houston had the two top throws of the night in women’s shot put as Nu’uausala Tuilefano (15.94m) and Daisy Monie (15.70m) earned gold and silver medals.  Tulane’s Maren Butler finished third on the podium with a throw of 15.65 meters.
 
UCF and South Florida had the four automatic qualifiers for the women’s 400-meter dash. The Knights had the top time with Kiah Williams at 52.49, while Latasha Smith ran a 53.19 for the third-best time.  The Bulls had the second-best time in Je’Nyia Burton’s 52.93, while Doneisha Anderson ran a 54.09.
 
In the men’s 400-meter dash, Cincinnati’s Keco Morrison earned the top time with a 46.57 with South Florida’s Elijah Wright just behind with a 46.69.  Houston’s Trey Johnson was the final automatic qualifier with a time of 46.84.
 
UCF claimed six of the eight qualifying spots in the women’s 100-meter dash as Beyonce Defreitas (11.39), Rayniah Jones (11.47), Daija Lampkin (11.51), Jaynah Jasper (11.57), I’Asia Wilson (11.58) and Kaylor Harris (11.60) all qualified. Houston’s Cecilia Tamayo-Garza (11.48) and East Carolina’s Melicia Mouzzon (11.54) rounded out the field.
 
In the men’s 100-meter dash, the Houston Cougars earned three qualifiers, including the top time by Shaun Maswanganyi (10.24).  East Carolina’s Royal Burris had the second fastest qualifying time at 10.42, while Cincinnati’s Naquille Harris was on his tail with the third fastest time of 10.43.
 
Cincinnati took home two medals in men’s shot put with Fred Moudani and Giovanni Gutierrez taking home gold and bronze medals.  Moudani broke the meet record with a throw of 19.71 meters, while Gutierrez had a best throw of 17.72 meters.  Memphis’s Sascha Schmidt earned the silver medal with a throw of 17.87 meters.
 
Layla Roebke of Tulsa repeated as the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase champion with a time of 10:11.61.  Tulane’s Mackenzie Callahan came in second place with a time of 10:29.20, while Tulsa’s Alicen Ashley took home the bronze medal, running the event in 10:32.47.
 
Jared Harrell took him the gold medal in long jump with a jump of 7.45 meters.  Wichita State’s Yuben Goncalves finished in second place with a distance of 7.40 meters, while Houston’s Benjamin Okafor rounded out the medalists in third place with a jump of 7.35 meters.
 
The day ended with the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase as Memphis’s Zachary Wyatt took home the gold medal with a time of 8:51.93.  Wichita State’s Clayton Duchatschek claimed the silver medal at 8:52.90, while Tulsa’s Pete Johnson earned the bronze medal at 8:55.37.
 
The 2023 American Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships will return for the final day of competition tomorrow, May 14 at 11:25 a.m. (ET) on ESPN+ beginning with women’s pole vault.
