American Athletes Thrive on Night One of 2023 NCAA Division I Track & Field Championships

AUSTIN, TexasCincinnati's Fred Moudani-Likibi and Houston's Christyan Sampy both earned First-Team All-America honors during the opening night of the 2023 NCAA Division I Track & Field Championships on Wednesday night at Mike A. Myers Stadium, while three other athletes advanced to the finals in their respective events for a chance at First Team honors on Friday.
 
Christyan Sampy of Houston earned First Team All-America status with an 8th place finish in pole vault, clearing a height of 5.45 meters (17’10.5”). Cincinnati’s Fred Moudani-Likibi advanced to the finals of shot put on his final throw of prelims for a distance of 19.93 meters (65’4.75”). On his final throw, he set a new American Athletic Conference record at 20.54 meters (67’4.75”) to finish in third place and First Team All-America Honors.
 
Houston’s Shaun Maswanganyi advanced to Friday finals in both the men’s 100-meter dash (9.99) and men’s 200-meter dash after running an American Athletic Conference record 19.99. He will be the five seed in the 100-meter dash and 6th seed in the 200-meter dash, securing a chance at First Team All-America honors in both events. Teammate De’Vion Wilson moved on to the final heat in the 110-meter hurdles, securing the five seed with a semifinal time of 13.37 to set a new American Athletic Conference record.
 
Tulsa’s Cormac Dalton and Scott Beattie ended the night for American athletes, both earning Second Team All-America honors in the 10,000-meter run. Dalton finished in 10th place with a time of 28:35.83, while Beattie finished in 13th place with a time of 29:10.31.
 
South Florida’s team of Danelson Mahautiere, Shevioe Reid, Jaleel Croal and Zayquan Lincoln earned Honorable Mention All-America honors in the 4x100-meter relay, running the event with a time of 39.82.
