AUSTIN, Texas – South Florida’s Romaine Beckford took home the gold medal in high jump at the 2023 NCAA Division I Track & Field Championships to sweep the high jump national title in both indoor and outdoor seasons this year. Houston’s De’Vion Wilson and Shaun Maswanganyi also earned medals on Friday night.
After winning the NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field national championship in high jump in February, South Florida’s Romaine Beckford defended his title in the outdoor championships, clearing 2.27m and setting a new South Florida record in the process. Beckford becomes the first American athlete to win the NCAA outdoor high jump national championship. Wichita State’s Brady Palen was also in the event, clearing 2.11m and finishing in 18
th place for Honorable Mention All-America honors.
De’Vion Wilson brought home the first medal of the night for The American, as the Houston Cougar finished in second place in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 13.26, setting a new American record in the process.
Teammate Shaun Maswanganyi followed in his footsteps, running a 9.91 100-meter dash to earn third place and First Team All-America status. For a second straight night, Maswanganyi broke the event record for The American. Maswanganyi also competed in the 200-meter dash, finishing in 6
th place with a time of 20.07 to earn First Team All-America honors.
