East Carolina Wins First American Women’s Soccer Championship

11.10.24

LAKEWOOD RANCH, Florida – Annabelle Abbott’s goal in the seventh minute of double overtime propelled No. 3 seed East Carolina to the 2024 American Women’s Soccer Championship with a 1-0 victory over No. 1 seed Memphis in the final on Sunday, November 10 at the Premier Sports Campus at Lakewood Ranch, Florida.

It was the first American Women’s Soccer Championship for the Pirates (10-3-7) and denied Memphis (13-2-4) its fourth consecutive Championship title. ECU had not played in a conference championship final since 2008. It was the seventh time the American Women’s Soccer Championship has gone to overtime, but only the second that did not need penalties.

In the second overtime period, Abbott collected a loose ball outside the 8-yard box and curled in a shot from the left side to earn the Pirates the title. Abbott was named the Championship’s Most Outstanding Offensive Player.

Maeve English, who earned her 30th shutout of her career, made five saves, including a pair of crucial stops in the first overtime period and was named the Championship’s Most Outstanding Defensive Player.
