Roberts’ Golden Goal Propels No. 3 East Carolina to Semifinals of 2024 American Women’s Soccer Championship

LAKEWOOD RANCH, Florida – Erica Roberts’ goal in the first minute of the second overtime period lifted No. 3 seed East Carolina over No. 6 seed Charlotte in the first quarterfinal of the 2024 American Women’s Soccer Championship Monday, November 4 at the Premier Sports Campus in Lakewood Ranch, Florida.
 
With the win, the Pirates (9-3-6) advance to face the winner of South Florida and North Texas in the semifinals on Thursday, November 7 at 4 p.m. ET on ESPN+. The 49ers conclude the season with a record of 4-8-7.
 
In the 101st minute, Roberts drove the ball up towards the left side of the box and launched a shot from 25 yards out to win the game. It was the Pirates’ seventh shot on goal of the match.
 
After one shot on goal for each team in the first half, East Carolina turned up the pressure in the second half, with five shots on goal to Charlotte’s one.
 
East Carolina’s Maeve English recorded her 29th career clean sheet, making two saves. Emma Wakeman made six saves for Charlotte.
