LAKEWOOD RANCH, Florida – No. 4 seed Rice defeated No. 5 UAB, 2-0, in the third quarterfinal of the 2024 American Women’s Soccer Championship Monday, November 4 at the Premier Sports Campus in Lakewood Ranch, Florida.
With the win, the Owls (12-5-2) will play the winner of Memphis and Tulsa in the semifinals on Thursday, November 7 at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN+. The Blazers fell to 7-5-5 on the season.
Rice scored twice in five minutes to break open the game. In the 71
st minute, a Rice cross bounced off Catarina Albuquerque and Allie Love in a scramble in front of the net before Sophie Zhang put the ball in the net to give the Owls the lead.
In the 76
th minute, Dayo Tennyson knocked a cross on and Love tapped it to Jules Johnston, who scored to double Rice’s lead.
UAB led in shots, 17-10, but Rice goalkeeper Faith Hutchins made eight saves to keep a clean sheet. Anika Toth recorded two saves for the Blazers.
