CHAMPIONSHIP CENTRAL
 
IRVING, Texas – FIU captured the 2024 American Women’s Swimming and Diving Championship at the Robson & Lindley Aquatics Center and Barr-McMillion Natatorium in Dallas, Texas.
 
FIU finished with 778.5 points to earn its first American Women’s Swimming and Diving Championship. SMU was second with 666 points, followed by Rice (593), East Carolina (446), Florida Atlantic (417), Tulane (379) and North Texas (336.5).
 
Rice’s Imogen Meers picked up her third individual title of the Championship, winning the 100-yard freestyle in 48.80. She won the 50-yard freestyle on Friday and the 100-yard backstroke on Saturday. Johanna Gudmundsdottir of SMU placed second in 49.08, while North Texas’ Shaena McCloud was third in 49.48.
 
FIU’s Christie Chue broke the Championship and pool record in the 200-yard breaststroke in a time of 2:07.99. It was Chue’s third title of the meet (100 breaststroke, 200 IM) and fifth overall after winning the 200 breaststroke and 200 IM in 2023. Chue was named the Championship’s Most Outstanding Swimmer. Nicole Frank placed second in 2:10.81 and Emma Becker touched third in 2:11.26 to complete a 1-2-3 sweep for FIU.
 
Ella Dyson of Rice repeated as the 1,650-yard freestyle champion in a time of 16:21.98. Amelia Kane placed second in 16:29.47 and Shannon Campbell finished third in 16:32.33 to complete a 1-2-3 sweep for Rice.
 
In the 200-yard backstroke, Jimena Leal of SMU won in a time of 1:55.19, ahead of Tulane’s Victoria Raymond in 1:56.55. Rice’s Naomi Filkin touched third in 1:57.21.
 
In the final individual event of the meet, Victoria Raymond of Tulane won the 200-yard butterfly in 1:56.78 and was named the Freshman of the Year. Rice’s Arielle Hayon placed second in 1:56.97, while Dolores Margni was third in 1:58.82.
 
In the inaugural Team Diving event, the SMU team of Nicole Stambo, Jaclynn Fowler and Ava Anderson finished first with 331.15 points. North Texas was second with 287.30 points, while FIU was right behind with 287.20 points.
 
In the final event, the 400-yard freestyle, the SMU squad of Lucrezia Napoletano, Gudmundsdottir, Tiffanie Ruan and Indra Vandenbussche placed first in 3:17.65. FIU placed second in 3:18.41, while Rice finished third in 3:19.83.
