DALLAS – UAB and North Texas both won on the first day of competition at the 2024 American Athletic Conference Women’s Tennis Championship Thursday at the Syslinger/Altec Tennis Complex.
North Texas defeated East Carolina, 4-1, before UAB took down Temple, 4-2, in first-round action. Both teams move on to the second round, which will see the No. 5 through No. 10 seeds play their tournament openers.

North Texas 4, East Carolina 1

Lily Schultz won a three-set battle at No. 6 singles to give No. 12 seed North Texas a 4-1 victory over No. 13 East Carolina Wednesday morning in its first American Athletic Conference Championship match.
North Texas captured the doubles point, capped by a 7-5 win at No. 3 by Lou Chalard and Marina Adafi, who defeated East Carolina’s Kim Auerswald and Anne Lou Champion.
Stadfany Nformi and Carolina Laydner pushed the Mean Green lead to 3-0 with straight-set victories over Auerswald (6-4, 6-3) and Kexuan Zhou (6-3, 6-4), respectively.
ECU’s Ines Bachir defeated Olivia Malm, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1 singles before Schulz finished the match with a 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 win over Joan Madi at No. 6.
North Texas advances to face No. 5 seed South Florida on Thursday, April 18 at 1 p.m. ET/noon CT.
UAB 4, Temple 2

Adela Wasserbauerova came from behind to win a three-set match at No. 1 singles to clinch UAB’s first victory at the American Athletic Conference Championship with a 4-2 win over Temple.
UAB won a hotly-contested doubles point as the final two matches went to simultaneous tiebreakers. Klara Kajabova and Maggie White clinched the point for the Blazers, claiming the tiebreaker, 7-4, over Temple’s Thamara Frasser Kawaratani and Marianthi Christoforidou.
Kajabova was the first to finish singles, earning a 6-4, 6-0 win over Temple’s Sena Takebe at No. 2 singles. The Owls came back and won at No. 3 and No. 4 singles within a minute of each other, with Maiko Uchijima defeating Mackenzie White, 6-2, 7-6 (3) and Jessie Zheng being victorious over Sydney Clark, 6-3, 7-5.
UAB’s Annalisa Smith won a three-set match over Temple’s Mari Christoforidou, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2, to set up Wasserbauerova’s win over Frasser Kawaratani, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4, to clinch the match for UAB.
UAB advances to play No. 6 seed Florida Atlantic on Thursday, April 18 at 7 p.m. ET/6 p.m. CT.
