IRVING, Texas – Three-time defending American Athletic Conference women’s soccer champion Memphis has been named the 2024 preseason favorite, as voted by the league’s head coaches.
The Tigers earned nine first-place votes and 99 total points to be named the favorite. South Florida was picked second with 91 points and one first-place vote, while East Carolina was selected third with 73 points. Charlotte received the remaining first-place vote and 72 total points to be picked fourth. Florida Atlantic was fifth with 64 points, followed by North Texas (54), Tulsa (46), UTSA (41), UAB (32), Rice (21) and Temple (12). Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team.
The American also announced the 2024 American Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Watch List, as selected by the conference’s head coaches. The watch list includes the 2023 American Midfielder of the Year and Rookie of the Year, Memphis’ Momo Nakao and Anna Hauer, respectively. Nakao and Tulsa’s Jordan Frederick were named to the 2023 All-AAC First Team, while seven members on the Watch List were named to the Second Team (Hauer, Charlotte’s Payton Patrick, East Carolina’s Annabelle Abbott and Maeve English, Florida Atlantic’s Jodi Smith, South Florida’s Georgia Brown and Tulsa’s Kaylyn Simmons.
The 2024 American Women’s Soccer Championship will be held November 4-10 at the Premier Sports Campus in Lakewood Ranch, Florida.
